Top Position Techniques to Give You an Edge!

By Kevin Fitzpatrick - Last updated: Thursday, October 1, 2015

University of Illinois associate head coach, Mark Perry, presents a few of the techniques he uses from the top position. Moves like the ones in this video are what helped Perry gain an edge over his opponents while he went on to win two NCAA Championships at the University of Iowa.

Top Position Technique

Drill Summary: Coach Perry urges all wrestlers to figure out the top position technique they are comfortable with, then stick to it during all matches. Some of the things he likes to do include: knee to back prior to the whistle, squeeze the opponent prior to the whistle (to take the air out of them), push forward with the inside arm immediately after the whistle and secure a claw inside. No matter what you do, Coach Perry urges you to think “Attack!”

Learn to Chop Like a Four Time All-American!

By Kevin Fitzpatrick - Last updated: Sunday, February 1, 2015

Joe LeBlanc, assistant coach at the University of Northern Colorado, takes you through an alternate version of the chop that he used to become a four time All-American at the University of Wyoming. LeBlanc’s chop can serve as a change of pace for opponents who may already be conditioned to the traditional chop style.

The Chop

Drill Summary: The wrestler starts behind their opponent, directly square to the opponent’s shoulders. The outside leg starts up, and the same hand starts on the opponent’s belly button. The key to this version of the chop is to shift the opponent’s hips with the off side arm. While the elbow hits the opponent’s hip, the other hand breaks down the opponent’s arm and the wrestler takes the opponent’s hip into the mat. Finally, the wrestler slides back into a tight waist tilt.

Increase Your Chances for Nearfall Points with These Techniques!

By nate.landas - Last updated: Friday, November 15, 2013

University of Nebraska Head Coach Mark Manning shows you a parallel, “cowboy” ride from flat on the mat to a chicken wing. This is a great series to rack up nearfall points.

Riding and Controlling

Three finishes are shown from here. First, walk the chicken wing over the hips, put your knee in his ribs on the opposite side of the wing and finish with a reverse half nelson. Second, lock a wing with both arms and walk the chicken wing over the opponent’s head. Third, walk the single wing over the head. Coach Manning finishes this segment with a warm up drill to practice getting the chicken wing in effectively.
