Founder of Team Mizuno, Mike Stith, takes pride in his teams’ smart and aggressive abilities on the base paths. In this drill, players will learn how to get out of the batter’s box quickly and sprint to first base to ensure the best chance of beating out any throw.
Drill Summary: Players form a single file line behind home plate. One by one, each player steps into the batter’s box and takes their stance without a bat. On the coach’s command, the player makes a motion like they just hit the ball and takes off running to first base. Coach Stith stresses the importance of lengthening strides to take away a step or two when running to the bag. Once the player has ran all the way through the bag without decreasing their speed, the next player can take off from the batter’s box. Repeat until all players have been through the drill.
Keys to the Drill:
1) Remember to swing.
2) Good running form.
3) Lengthen the stride, don’t break down the stride to hit the front of the bag.
4) Run through the bag.
