Prevent Opponents from Stabbing Through!

By Kevin Fitzpatrick - Last updated: Monday, February 1, 2016

Allowing an opponent to stab their arms through from behind can put you into a tough spot on the mat. Russ Cozart, Brandon High School (Florida) head coach and 2014 National Wrestling Coach of the Year, shows you a drill that he’s developed to train wrestlers to ward off an opponent who stabs and reaches.

Stab and Reach

Drill Summary: This is a partner drill. Have one partner stand behind the other, with the person in front maintaining a position with their elbows tucked close to their body. The wrestler in the back tries to stab between their partner’s arms and reach underneath their partner’s elbows to try to maintain control. Meanwhile, the wrestler in front does their best to use their hands and arms to ward off their partner’s attempts to get their hands into a position of control.

Counter Opponents Who Have Inside Control!

By Kevin Fitzpatrick - Last updated: Thursday, October 1, 2015

Russ Cozart, head coach at Brandon High School in Florida, shows how to execute the “Two-on-One,” an effective move for stopping opponents who are good at inside control. By neutralizing aggressive opponents who maintain inside control, you will have a better chance of winning the match.

Drill Summary: Wrestlers pair up and begin folk style pummeling. On the coach’s command, one of the wrestlers goes for a two-on-1 by getting elbow control, sliding their hand up and grabbing the opponent’s wrist with their other hand. From there, Coach Cozart likes to teach his wrestlers to get a single leg on the same side.

Ward Off Defenders’ Hands from the Bottom Position!

By Kevin Fitzpatrick - Last updated: Tuesday, September 1, 2015

Brandon High School head coach, Russ Cozart, teaches his athletes the “Crazy Hands” drill to train them to defend against an opponent trying to lock their hands from behind. By keeping their arms tight to their bodies and feeling where the opponent’s hands are, wrestlers can avoid being wrapped up.

Crazy Hands

Drill Summary: Wrestlers partner up and one wrestler stands directly behind the other. The wrestler from behind applies pressure and tries to lock their hands around the wrestler in the front. The wrestler in front tries to prevent their partner from locking their hands. When the person behind reaches over top, the person in front should reach up and get their elbows out. When the person behind reaches under, the wrestler should keep their elbows in. When the person goes low, the wrestler in front should get their thumbs to their thighs and have their hands ready to grab. After 10 seconds of hand fighting, the wrestler in front cuts out and partners swap positions.
