Learn Rich DeSelm’s “Weave Drill” for the Butterfly!

By Kevin Fitzpatrick - Last updated: Friday, April 1, 2016

Rich DeSelm, University of North Carolina head coach and 2011 World University Games head coach, uses the “Weave Drill” to improve his swimmers’ body position for the butterfly. This is a great warm-up drill and can be used by beginning to advanced swimmers to ensure a great T-press.

Weave Drill

Drill Summary: This drill can be completed with a snorkel. The swimmer pushes off from the wall with their eyes down and undulates through the water. Their focus is T-pressing from their head down through their chest. As the swimmer T-presses, their hips should come up. This drill can be done with no kick or with a slight kick.

Work on Body Flow for the Butterfly!

By Kevin Fitzpatrick - Last updated: Friday, May 1, 2015

University of North Carolina head coach Rich DeSelm uses the “Combination Drill” to promote staying low and gliding through the water. This exercises gives athletes a drill that will help them improve their stroke, without the extra fatigue of doing continuous reps of the full stroke.

Combination Drill

Drill Summary: Swimmers push off the wall and scull four times. After that, they take two butterfly strokes (being sure to breathe on one or both strokes). Do this drill twice in a row on the way down the pool, then turn around and do it twice on the way back.
