Mimic Joe Amplo’s NASCAR 1-3-2 Set!

By Kevin Fitzpatrick - Last updated: Tuesday, February 9, 2016

A big part of the philosophy for Joe Amplo, Marquette University head coach and U.S. Men’s Lacrosse National Team assistant coach, is to use drills that mimic game-like situations and actions in practice. For Coach Amplo’s NASCAR 1-3-2 set, he uses the “4-Man Open Heat” drill to simulate long passes and dodges.

4-Man Open Heat

Drill Summary: To begin, a dodger stays tight to the dodge line and passes to an attackman underneath the goal. To get open, the attackman V-cuts out and executes a pull pass to another attackman on the opposite side of the goal. That attackman then passes to the last middie in front of the goal, who shoots at the net.

Keys to the Drill:

1) Dodger stays tight to dodge line.
2) V-cut to get open.
3) Accurate passes.
4) SPEED.

Improve Your Shooting with Tennis Balls!

By Kevin Fitzpatrick - Last updated: Tuesday, January 12, 2016

High Point University head coach, Jon Torpey, is fresh off leading the Panthers to a Southern Conference championship. Coach Torpey teaches players a drill in this clip that requires them to make a pass to a teammate and shoot to the far third of the goal, improving accuracy of both passes and shots.

Shooting With Tennis Ball

Drill Summary: Form a line about 15 yards in front of the goal and set a cone roughly 12 yards in front of the net. Every other player in line should have a tennis ball. The first player runs up and makes a move on the cone, then darts to the right at an angle. Once they’ve ran about 5 yards, they turn and run backward, then throw a follow pass to the next person in line. The person receiving the pass get it just on the right of the cone and shoots the ball toward the far third of the goal.

Keys to the Drill:

1) Aim for the far third of the goal.
2) Full speed cuts.
3) Hands far down the shaft (shooter).
4) Accurate shots and passes.
