Championship Productions Weekly Winners 2/8-2/14: Kansas Halts the Oklahoma Offense

By Kevin Fitzpatrick - Last updated: Monday, February 15, 2016

Last week featured a total of 14 wins by Championship Productions authors over top 25 teams! Let’s take a look back and highlight some of the best victories of the week.

Congrats to the following coaches and teams!

Gold Medal

No. 6 Kansas Jayhawks 76, No 3. Oklahoma Sooners 72

The rematch of January 4th’s amazing triple overtime game lived up to the hype. The Jayhawks raced out to a 14 point lead in the first half on the road, but Oklahoma stormed back to take the lead just a couple minutes into the second half. In the end, KU edged the Sooners to jump back into a tie at the top of the Big 12 Conference standings.

The key stat of the game was Kansas holding Oklahoma to 33% shooting from the field. Considering the Sooners are one of the best offensive teams in the country, limiting them to 20 made shots on 60 attempts is a great defensive effort from the Jayhawks.

Silver Medal

Northern Iowa 53, No. 25 Wichita State 50

Northern Iowa has had some ups and downs this year, but when they play their best, they’ve proved they can beat anyone as shown by their wins over North Carolina and Iowa State earlier in the year. On Saturday, the Panthers added another impressive win to their resume by knocking off Wichita State on the road. The loss by the Shockers snapped their 43-game home winning streak.

Taking a look at the box score in this one, some odd things stand out. Despite winning, Northern Iowa was out-rebounded 48-27 on the glass, including giving up 20 offensive rebounds to Wichita State. The Panthers themselves only grabbed one offensive board all game. The Shockers took 18 more shots from the field than UNI, but both teams ended up draining 20 shots each.

Bronze Medal

Creighton 70, No. 5 Xavier 56

The Bluejays jumped out to an early lead and never let it evaporate en route to an upset over Big East foe Xavier. The Musketeers had a horrendous shooting night from long range, only connecting on one of their 24 3-pointers.

Additionally, Creighton held Xavier to just 30% shooting from the field. Going 19/26 from the free throw stripe helped the Bluejays keep the lead at an arm’s length all night long. The double-digit margin of victory over a top 5 team is what gives them this week’s final medal.
