Use This Fast Pace Drill to Work on Shooting Techniques!

By nate.landas - Last updated: Tuesday, March 11, 2014

Mark Petrone coaches alongside highly successful Haverford School Head Coach, John Nostrant. This is a fast-paced shooting drill that gets the players a high number of shots on goal in a short amount of time. This drill reinforces technique and is a great way to work on placement.

Warm Up Shooting Drill

How it Works: Form two lines of players, five yards outside each pipe and 20 yards out from the cage. One player passes to the other side, who catches and then takes a shot. The player who passed, receives the next pass from the other side for the next shot. And it continues in that fashion at a high pace.

Drill Tips:

  1. Know where you want to place the ball before you get it
  2. Show your back to the goalie, then follow through with your shoulders

  3. Shoot hard and overhand, and point where you want the shot to go

To increase the challenge, give your players a defined area to shoot at such as a lower corner, far side pipe, high corner. This same drill can also be done from different distances from the front of the cage.

Improve Your Team’s Scoring with This Shooting Drill!

Mark Petrone, Assistant Coach at the Haverford School, puts the team through a great pre-game warm-up drill to tune up the sticks. This drill is intended to strengthen shooting fundamentals, passing, and shooting with constant motion. Here you will get a fast-paced shooting drill that is easy on the legs due to limited running.

3 Man Shooting Drill

Player Movements: Divide the players into three spots in the shape of a triangle above the cage. The passing order is right-side to middle and then left-side to the right-side (you pass and then you get a shot).

Drill Essentials: This drill relies heavily upon proper player movement and rotation. By rotating positions, the players get the opportunity to work on shooting with both hands.

Drill Tips: Remind the players to get the shot off quickly.
