Exclusive All-Access Pass: Duke Men’s Basketball Practice

In this week’s edition of All-Access, we take you to Durham, North Carolina for an exclusive look at a Duke men’s basketball practice. Watch as head coach Mike Krzyzewski leads his squad through two-man drills, a consistent and instrumental part of Blue Devil basketball practices.

Two-man drills are typically used at the onset of a Duke basketball practice and are aimed at getting players moving around the floor and warmed up before more demanding elements of practice are implemented.

The workouts being performed — which include a variety of fastbreak and transition break segments like baseball passes and stop & dish plays — are influential in developing game-like communication and “real situations” between teammates as well. They are also helpful in sparking player communication and awareness during practices set at odd hours, such as early morning sessions that may find athletes rather groggy.

It’s also a good time for the coaches to talk with the training staff to see if there are any new injuries, updates or other developments with particular athletes. For instance, at this time, Coach K can observe a player early on in the practice who may have a lingering injury and will be able to deduce whether they may be restricted from any upcoming drills or particular activity.

Coach K Notches Win No. 880!

Congratulations to Duke basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski, who passed Dean Smith for second place on the all-time NCAA wins list as his No. 1 Blue Devils dominated UNC Greensboro, 108-62.

Coach K notched the 880th win of his career to move past the former North Carolina coach and now trails just Bob Knight, who currently holds the Division I men’s basketball record at 902 career wins.

Duke Ranked #1 in 2010 Men’s AP Preseason Poll!

Duke University, coached by Mike Krzyzewski, is ranked #1 in the 2010-11 Associated Press men’s basketball preseason poll. The Blue Devils received 55 of the 65 first-place votes and 1613 points. The other programs who received first-place votes include Michigan State (8) and Kansas State (2).

Krzyzewski, Duke Basketball Win 2010 NCAA Championship!

Mike Krzyzewski won his fourth NCAA championship as the Duke Blue Devils defeated Brad Stevens‘ Butler Bulldogs 61-59 in the 2010 NCAA championship game. Krzyzewski has guided Duke to 8 NCAA championship games, 11 regional championships (Final Four), 12 ACC tournament championships, 12 ACC regular season championships, and 12 elite eights. Coach K has amassed an NCAA record 77 tournament victories and is the sixth men’s basketball coach in NCAA history to reach the 800-win plateau.

Krzyzewski’s Victorious in 1,000th Game at Duke

Mike Krzyzewski and the Duke Blue Devils beat the Maryland Terrapins in Coach K’s 1,000th career game on the sidelines at Duke, a feat that only seven other coaches in NCAA Division I history have accomplished. In 30 seasons as head coach, Coach K has gone 781-219 with 294 wins coming between 2000 -2009, the most in the history of the game by any school in any decade.

Mike Krzyzewski, the U.S.A. Olympic and Duke University basketball coach, has just released a new basketball DVD titled All Access Duke Basketball Practice with Mike Krzyzewski.
