Get Training Wisdom from Clyde Hart!

By Kevin Fitzpatrick - Last updated: Tuesday, December 1, 2015

Baylor University director of track and field, Clyde Hart, has coached 34 national champions and 533 All-Americans during his time in Waco. Now, he explains some of his thoughts on training for each gender and how moving from quantity to quality in your yearly training routines can help your athletes.

Key to Training

Clip Summary: The theory that Coach Hart preaches is “quantity to quality” as the season goes on. He discusses building a good base in a pyramid of training, then advancing up the pyramid by switching the ratio of aerobic to anaerobic work.

Get Quicker Feet Using Ladder Drills!

By Kevin Fitzpatrick - Last updated: Monday, June 1, 2015

Baylor University director of track and field, Clyde Hart, has coached eight athletes to nine Olympic gold medals. Coach Hart relies on the ladder drills presented in this clip to help athletes increase the quickness of their feet.

Ladder Drills

Drill Summary: Set up a ladder or tape on the track with the horizontal bars about two and a half feet apart. Athletes line up on one side of the ladder and take turns running through it, getting one foot down between each bar. Coach Hart wants runners to land flat footed so it is more similar to how their feet hit the ground during a race, which will force them to prepare the trail leg more quickly for the next step. After runners have mastered the drill with the shorter interval, increase the distance between the ladder bars up to three feet.

Keys to the Drill:

1) Stay off of your toes.
2) Don’t lean too far forward.
3) Keep your eyes up, don’t look down at the ground.
4) Get the trail leg through quickly.

Give Your Relay Runners the Best Chance to be at Full Speed During the Exchange!

By dustin.moscoso - Last updated: Monday, December 1, 2014

Baylor University Director of Track and Field, Clyde Hart, explains the importance of marking the zone so that the outgoing runner has the best chance to be at full speed during the exchange.

Marking the Zone

Coach Hart explains that he has his athletes use two marks: a Set Mark and a Go Mark. The Go Mark is measured out first by counting heel to toes (Coach Hart has his athletes use 24. This might change depending on your athletes). The Set Mark is roughly 8 yards behind the Go Mark. Coach Hart likes his athletes to get into running position when the incoming runner reaches the Set Mark. Running position is defined by Coach Hart as “digging your spikes” into the track and applying pressure to your front foot, so your back foot can move freely on its first step. When the incoming runner reaches the Go Mark, they are to take off and at full speed.

Improve Your Relays with Insight from Clyde Hart!

By dustin.moscoso - Last updated: Monday, September 1, 2014

Baylor University Director of Track and Field and 400m Coach, Clyde Hart, discusses the importance of the baton in sprint relays.  Coach Hart explains that the only thing that is moving around the whole track is the baton.

At Baylor, Coach Hart has coached 34 National Champions (14 individual and 20 relay).   Coach Hart goes into a story that sets up the whole 4x100m relay segment. The story explains why moving the baton around the track is the most important concept in 4x100m training. Once the athletes are sold on your training for the 4x100m you will be able to take average sprinters and have an excellent relay team, he explains. Coach Hart also goes into the history of the 4x100m race and talks about the history of the race.
