University of Illinois Head Coach, Kevin Hambly, works with his players on a core focused blocking exercise. It is important for the athletes to feel they are pushing with their core as they block the ball. This will give you more strength in your blocks than pushing with just your shoulders.
Former high school coach and 2x Olympian, Kim Oden has her players run through a ‘Vision Drill’ which helps blockers recognize the direction of the attacking hit. Have your blockers focus on the positioning of the attacker’s shoulders throughout this sequence.
Use three different types of tosses and hits to challenge your blockers.

Learn a very useful blocking drill from one of the top blockers in USA and NCAA volleyball history, Kim Oden. The Gauntlet Drill keeps players moving quickly by doing a step-hop to make a block on the hitters.
Make sure the hitters have a stable surface to hit from. Also, the blockers can use various types of shuffles to get to each spot for the block.
