Learn the Fundamentals of a Back Jump!

By Kevin Fitzpatrick - Last updated: Tuesday, March 1, 2016

Jason Baumann, Edina High School diving coach and owner of North Star Diving Club, runs through the basic aspects of a quality back jump. The back jump can serve as a great tool for athletes who don’t have much prior diving experience and need a place to begin learning the fundamentals.

Back Jump with Arm Swing

Drill Summary: Start with the balls of your feet on the board. Next, bend your knees and make sure your heels point up (the body should form a straight line between the shoulders, hips and heels in this position). Maintain good balance and lift away from the board while also staying tight in your stomach. Use no more than four oscillations, otherwise you may be deducted by the judges.

Use Power and Placement to Create More Effective Attacks!

By nate.landas - Last updated: Friday, April 5, 2013

See what 2011 Volleyball Magazine Coach of the Year, Kevin Hambly, has to offer for tips on creating strong attacks.  Teach your athletes to continue attacking using their hips and core to generate torque and power.  Striking the ball to go in various directions will allow your attackers to reduce the effectiveness of your opponent’s blockers.

Facing a blocker will make this drill more game-like. Players still hit cross body and wrist away shots, but adding a blocker requires more concentration.
