Become Mentally Tough with the 1-2-1 Drill!

By dustin.moscoso - Last updated: Friday, August 1, 2014

The University of Iowa Head Volleyball Coach, Bond Shymansky, presents a 1-2-1 Drill. This is a sideout drill with a serve for the final point to mimic the stress of serving and scoring after a rally.

1-2-1 Drill

The drill begins with the “scoring” team receiving a serve. If they sideout, they receive a small point. This team then receives two free balls, receiving a small point for each sideout. If the team scores three small points, the team serves. If they lose any of the three prior points, the team returns to the start of the drill and receives a serve. If the team scores all four points, they receive one big point and rotate.
