Jerry Petitgoue is truly a coaching legend for high school boys’ basketball not only in the state of Wisconsin, but also in the country. When instructional videos first began coach Petitgoue was one of the first coaches to exhibit the skills and drills coaches could implement for success. Years later, coach Petitgoue is still at it! In this passing drill, coach Petitgoue puts all of the essential elements together to properly push the ball up the court. Coach’s design allows his team to work on not only pushing the ball up the court with quick outlets, but getting the ball to the middle of the court in order to break any press.
Drill Setup: This drill is a full court drill that is continuous with groups of five players.
Athlete Movements: The drill starts with an outlet pass to the sideline and a quick relay pass to the middle of the court. The player receiving the ball in the middle of the court looks to pass the ball ahead for a quick layup. This process continues consistently until the next group is designated to be in.

Watch and learn the keys to the “Romanian Dead Lift.” This weight training exercise builds the posterior chain which plays a large role in your vertical jump.
Athlete Movements: The player should keep his knees slightly bent and his back arched. He bends over as much as he can while keeping the bar in contact with the lower extremities on the way down. Movement should only occur at the hip joint. Once the knees are slightly bent they shouldn’t move on the way down. The athlete then comes back up to the starting position.

Nick Cammarano is the head coach of the Frank Antonides Middle School Boys Basketball Team and has achieved almost 300 career wins in 15 seasons. Here you will see two drills related to the Box Offense. The essentials of both drills is for the 2 and 3 to make quick step movements executing the V-Cut and being able to square up to the basket for a shot, or drive to the rim. The V-Cut and the Tandem Guards drills are great for practicing how to freeze or misguide a defender, and creating various opportunities to score.
Drill Setup: For the Box Offense V-Cuts Drill, the 1 man will start at the top of the parameter and the 2 and 3 will be at each low post block (either the left or right side of the paint). And for the Tandem Guards Drill, the 1′s are on the perimeter near the wings and the 2 and 3 are near the low post blocks on the left and right side of the paint, respectively.
Athlete Movements: On the start command for the V-Cut Drill, the 1 dribbles toward the basket and passes the ball to either the 2 or 3 depending on who is open after executing a V-Cut toward the nearest wing. Next, the 1 sprints toward the man he or she did not pass to and screens for the weak side player coming around the perimeter. The player with the ball can either take a shot or pass to the man coming around the perimeter at the top of the key and screen for the weak side player coming to the top of the perimeter, usually the 1.
In the Tandem Guards Drill each 1 dribbles toward the basket while the low post 2 and 3 make a V-Cut to the nearest wing looking for a shot off the catch, or a drive to the basket.

2014 NCAA Championship Coach, Geno Auriemma, takes you through how to teach and execute proper on the ball defense. Utilizing these proper techniques and understanding your opponent’s strengths are key in disrupting the opposing team’s offensive design. It is the fine details that are often overlooked, but they are the most essential and effective. Coach Auriemma displays these keys in his on-court demonstration.
Drill Setup: Two players are in a 1-on-1 situation. The defender is looking to string out the attack dribble made by the offense.
Athlete Movements: When the ball is picked up, it is the defenders job to guard the opponent and create an uncomfortable position for the offense. Once the whistle is blown again the player must take another attack dribble toward another specified area on the court. Coach Auriemma also describes how to defend your opponent and how to place your players in the most successful position.
Teaching Points: Auriemma stresses the importance of being aware of your opponent’s strengths and weaknesses, early and often.
Fran Fraschilla is a big believer in early preparation to get your team ready for things they will see later in the season. With the 3 Man Series, Coach Fraschilla shows a great example of how your team can help “choreograph your defense” and begin to guard specific actions that could cause your defense problems.
Athlete Movements: Coach Fraschilla sets this simple drill up as a 3-on-3 drill that also includes an unguarded passer. This drill is set up specifically for guarding a staggered double screen in half-court offense. Coach Fraschilla does a great job of showing exactly how to guard this action effectively.
Teaching Points: This pattern will teach players how to guard this action and develop good defensive habits.
