USA Developmental National Team Head Coach, Don Showalter, has been one of the most successful coaches in his position and always creates a defensive minded team. If you’re looking for drills to create that mindset, Coach Showalter gives you just that with some of his easy and effective defensive drills, including his “Cutthroat” drill.

Coach Showalter shows a defensive 4 on 4 drill, that gives the players a competitive drill in order to create a defensive mindset. Showalter gives basic rules that if you defend and get a stop, you earn a point. The goal is to get three points for a win. If you get a stop on defense you stay and defend the next group of 4 players. Throughout this drill you can implement certain offensive rules to work on certain situations and offensive concepts you may see throughout the season. This is a great drill to help your team compete this season in practice.  Coach also explains ways to alter and tailor the drill to your philosophy through his on-court demonstrations.

This video came from Championship Productions’ DVD “Don Showalter: Practice Drills to Build a Defensive Mindset.”  View our complete library of over 800 basketball DVDs here!
