A Defensive Exercise that Focuses on Digging!

Here is an excellent segment for teaching both the college and the high school volleyball athlete. Highly successful volleyball coach at the University of Illinois, Kevin Hambly, focuses on digging the low ball. Digging the low ball is often the most difficult move to teach the young athlete. Hambly goes through a full progression of movements and drills to make this move easy and positive.

Digging the Low Ball

The keys points to emphasize to athletes are:

  • Bending the knees for the low ball
  • Bending the ankles to get down to the floor
  • Practice with catching the ball before digging the ball
