In the 2013-2014 season, Fred Hoiberg led his team to a 2014 Big 12 Tournament Championship and an appearance in the NCAA Sweet Sixteen. Watch as Coach Hoiberg shows a couple of scoring options off the secondary break. These options start with a wide pin down screen from the trailer position, which allows his team to be a high scoring unit.
Wide Pin-Down Options
Athlete Movements: This simple action begins with a wide pin-down screen from the trailer position. The wing receiving the screen has the option to curl his cut right into the lane for a lay-up.
The next option extends the Wide Pin-Down action, as Coach Hoiberg guides the wing curls through the lane, but does not receive the pass. The screener will then roll back to the ball and catch it in a “pinch post” area that could result in a hand-off or subsequent ball screen with proper spacing on the backside.
Teaching Points: Spacing on the other side of the floor is emphasized by Coach Hoiberg, as he has a shooter spotted in the corner, the high wing, and a low post player gets to “his room” – the short corner spot off the lane that allows the lane to open up more.
