Geno Auriemma, UCONN Finish 2009 Undefeated!

Geno Auriemma and the University of Connecticut clinched its third perfect season (39-0) and sixth NCAA National Championship in the program’s history as the Huskies defeated the Louisville Cardinals 76-54 in the 2009 title game at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Missouri. 

Auriemma has guided the Huskies to six NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Championships, 15 Big East Championships, 14 Big East Tournament Championships, 10 Final Fours, 4 straight 30-win seasons, 16 straight “Sweet 16″ appearances, 21 straight NCAA appearances, and three undefeated seasons.  Auriemma is a 6X Naismith Coach of the Year, 3X WBCA National Coach of the Year, and has been inducted into the Naismith, Women’s Basketball, & National Italian American Sports Hall of Fames.

Jamie Dixon Honored After 31-Win Season!

Pittsburgh Head Basketball Coach, Jamie Dixon, has been named the 2009 Naismith Men’s Coach of the Year after leading the Panthers to a school-record 31 wins and the NCAA tournament regional finals.  The sixth-year head coach also guided Pitt to its first-ever top seed in the tourney and the school’s first #1 ranking in the AP Top 25.  Dixon has compiled a 163-45 overall record, won the BIG EAST regular season Championship in 2004 & the BIG EAST tournament in 2008, and was named the BIG EAST Coach of the Year in 2004.

Roy Williams, North Carolina Win 2009 NCAA Men’s Basketball Title!

Roy Williams and the North Carolina Tar Heels won the 2009 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament at Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan.  The Tar Heels defeated Michigan State, coached by Tom Izzo, by a score of 89-72.   The title was North Carolina’s fifth title while it was Williams’ second.  His first national championship came in 2005.  Williams has compiled an overall record of 594-138 and was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2007.

Arizona Hires Sean Miller to Lead Men’s Basketball Program!

The University of Arizona has announced their next men’s head basketball coach – Sean Miller.  Miller is heading to Arizona after spending five seasons as head coach at Xavier, where he’s guided the Musketeers to its fourth consecutive 20-victory season and fourth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance last month.  Miller’s teams have won the last three A10 Conference regular-season championships and holds a 120-47 career coaching record.

Miller succeeds Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame member, Lute Olson, who has an overall record of 781-280 in 37 years.  Olson spent 25 years at the University of Arizona, 9 years at the University of Iowa, and one year at Long Beach State University.  Olson was named National Coach of the Year in 1988 and 1990, and won the NCAA Division I Tournament in 1997.




Bill Self Named 2009 AP College Basketball Coach of the Year!

Bill Self, who led Kansas to the national championship last year and had the Jayhawks back in the title hunt this season, is The Associated Press’ U.S. college basketball coach of the year.  Self lost all five starters from the team that beat Memphis in the championship game, leaving him to work with two veterans and eight newcomers.  The Jayhawks finished 27-8 and reached the round of 16 in the NCAA tournament, winning the Big 12 title for the fifth straight season.  Self has a 169-40 record in six seasons at Kansas and is 376-145 in 16 seasons as a head coach.
