Brands, Hawkeyes Win 2009 Team Wrestling Title

The University of Iowa Hawkeyes and coaches Tom Brands and Terry Brands claimed the school’s 22nd NCAA Wrestling Championship!  Despite crowning no individual champions, the Hawkeye wrestling team won its second straight NCAA team title at the 2009 NCAA Championships in St. Louis, MO. 

The Hawkeyes outscored Ohio State by 4.5 points, 96.5  – 92 .  The team race was the closest margin since Iowa won the 1999 team title by two points.  Iowa crowned a total of five all-Americans while Ohio State crowned four, including NCAA Champion J Jaggers.  The Buckeyes are coached by Tom Ryan.

Tom Ryan Named 2009 National Coach of the Year!

Tom Ryan, Head Wrestling Coach at Ohio State University, was named the 2009 National Coach of the Year following the wrestling championships in St. Louis, MO.  Ryan guided the Buckeyes to a NCAA runner-up finish in the team standings, 4.5 points behind the University of Iowa. 

Ryan crowned one national champion (J Jaggers), two runners-up (Reece Humphrey & Mike Pucillo), and four All-Americans.  The Buckeyes completed the 2009 season with a dual meet record of 16-2 and were 7-1 in the Big Ten Conference.

Strasburg Honored for the Fourth Consecutive Week!

Stephen Strasburg, a junior pitcher at San Diego State, has been named the Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week by Collegiate Baseball for the fourth consecutive week.  Strasburg has also been tabbed as the MWC Pitcher of the Week, his 10th award overall and 4th in 2009.  In five starts in 2009, Strasburg is 4-0 with a 1.57 earned run average.  He has struck out 74 batters over 34.1 innings for an average of 19.4 strikeouts per nine innings. 

San Diego State, coached by Tony Gwynn and Rusty Filter, hold a 15-8 overall record.  The following DVD from Rusty Filter shares some of the tools to become a great pitcher – How to Build a 12 Pitch Arsenal.
