Coach Russ Rose led the Penn State Nittany Lions to one of the most impressive seasons in NCAA history. The Nittany Lions finished with a 38-o record, only one of four undefeated teams in NCAA Division I women’s volleyball history (Long Beach State, Nebraska, USC). The Nittany Lions successfully defended their 2007 national title with a 3-0 sweep of #2 ranked Stanford in the 2008 DI Volleyball Championship. Penn State only dropped two sets during the season (in the semifinals vs. Nebraska), and finished its year with its 37th sweep in 38 matches.
The Nittany Lions also became only the sixth team to repeat as national champions and the first since USC captured back-to-back title in 2002 and 2003. This is Penn State’s third national title in school history – all since 1999.
Eugene Lenti, Depaul University’s head softball coach, was enshrined into the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Hall of Fame on December 12, 2008. Depaul University’s all-time winningest coach, Lenti is entering his 28th season with 983 career wins. Lenti is averaging 36.4 wins per season and ranks ninth among active Division I coaches. He has taken 16 teams to the postseason and four teams have reached the Women’s College World Series since 1999.
Lenti and his staff were honored as the 1999 NFCA National Coaching Staff of the Year, while Lenti was also named the Mideast Coach of the Year. Lenti’s coaching staff was again honored by the NFCA in 2007 & 2005 and were named Mideast Coaching Staff of the Year. Lenti was named the Conference USA Women’s Coach of the Decade in 2005 after amassing a 105-21 record during the six seasons the Blue Demons competed in Conference USA. Lenti was also named the C-USA Softball Coach of the Decade. Over the years, Lenti and his staffs have been honored nine times as either the Conference Coach or Coaching Staff of the Year.
Dean Smith, former University of North Carolina Head Basketball Coach, compiled 879 wins in 36 years of coaching. Only Bob Knight has more wins in NCAA Division I basketball history (902). Coach Smith led the Tar Heels to two NCAA championships (1982, 1993), 11 Final Four appearances, 17 ACC regular season titles, 13 ACC tournament titles, and 27 NCAA tournament appearances. The basketball legend earned four National Coach of the Year awards and was named ACC Coach of the Year eight times.
