Practice Time: Drills or Scrimmage
January 29, 2012 11:06PM
I'm new to coaching, third season total, second as a varsity coach. What are your thoughts on how much of practice should be drills and how much should you scrimmage? Do you vary this as the season goes on?

48 mins Defensive Drills ...12 mins Defensive based scrimmage

48 mins Offensive Drills ... 12 mins Offensive based scrimmage

Variation depends on a number of factors based on what we are doing well and what we are not. You can cut both your drill and scrimmage time using the "perfect possession" ... instead of a drill or 5 on 5 being 10 mins run it until you get a set number of perfect possessions for each ... I have had my practices last 45 mins to the entire 2 hours. Players earn shorter [more intense]
practices.
