Any defense you employ will depend squarely on your personel.

I have had success using both defenses.

Having length and players who can anticipate deflections and turnovers will also be a determining factor.

As far as videos that cover the 2-2-1, I recommend Vance Walberg's 2-2-1 press DVD.

For the 1-3-1, I use a DVD from a high school coach, Coach Steve Klaas from Adams-Friendship High School in Wisconsin.

They are both great teachers of their respective defense.

Hope this helps, good luck.

I don't like the 1-3-1 attack in any situation, unless you've got the more talented team I don't believe a successful 1-3-1 is going to help you win games vs the elite of the league. The 2-2-1 is a great tempo press, which I love. UConn's coach has a great 2-2-1 series out. I might suggest you look into a 2-1-2 3/4 court press. This press is hard for the offense to read, takes away the middle pass and allows for perfect trapping lanes in hard to counter areas. For a good 2-1-2 I would suggest Coach Mac's 3/4 Court Trapping System.

1. 2-2-1 = use after all MADE baskets.

2. 1-2-1-1 = after all MADE free throws, & dead ball situations in back court.
