Coach,

Backing off the plate is the first step - as long as they can cover the outside croner. Then, try to keep their swing short & compact. I've seen individuals hit a growth spurt and their swing tends to become "long" and their bat speed decreases.

Work the inside pitch on a tee - short, compact swings. This should help...but then you'll need to work on their patience & the outside corner. They should have the same mindset - fastball in on the plate, then adjust (& wait) for pitches on the outside corner and off speed. This can be difficult (as they're afraid of getting jammed & thinking fastball in), but repetitions in the cage will certainly help.

Thanks,

Is anyone aware of any instructional materials on batting drills for tall batters? I coach 16-19 year olds, and we have a few kids who are 6'2"-6'4". We are consistent in our approach to hitting no matter how tall the batter. But these young men, who are growing into their bodies, seem to get jammed a lot, because of their height and their long arms. So, they back off the plate, sometimes way off, and have had some success. But there has to be a better way to approach the pitch. Any thoughts? Thank you. Tim Fedele

how to hold a runner on 2nd base

There's a lot of factors to take in when holding a runner on 2nd base. Either the 2nd baseman or shortstop can hold the runner early in the pitcher's routine.

Then, I recommend knowing the pitcher / hitter. If there's a right-handed pull hitter up to bat, or if your pitcher is not overpowering...I would suggest having your 2nd baseman hold the runner (keep your SS in position - thinking the ball will be hit to the left side of the infield). If the right-handed hitter has a slow bat or is a little weak / your pitcher is overpowering...I would suggest having the shortstop hold the runner (keep your 2B in position - thinking the hitter will be late and hit the ball to the right side of the infield)...and follow the same idea with left-handed hitters.
As they advance into higher levels of baseball, they'll be able to read the hitters quite well...and know what pitch the pitcher is throwing which will also determine who may hold the runner.

Whoever is holding the runner should be close, if not at their position when the ball enters the hitting zone. Many coaches teach that when the pitcher lifts his leg, that is when you should return to your position. With this said, you have to really work the runner on 2nd early and often & really practice your pickoffs (pitcher / SS or 2B AND pitcher / 1B). Keeping the runner on 2nd is important - especially at the lower levels because 2nd may not be considered "scoring position" (younger kids with 90ft bases & OF playing in because lack of power). But if the runner has a great leadoff & good secondary shuffle, he'll score easily.

I hope this helps - let me know if you have any additional questions!

Thanks,

Hi Everyone. What do you think of this? I’d like to share about a batting technique I’ve used that really works. I’ve played baseball/softball for years, and never have been satisfied with the way I hit. This strategy trains your eyes to be able to SEE and HIT the ball unlike any technique I’ve ever used. It actually gives you a longer reaction time to see and hit pitches when you apply it. It’s GUARANTEED to do this. As a result, any player who consistently applies this will hit more line drives, have much fewer strike outs, and virtually eliminate any more ground outs and pop-ups. At first I thought it was crazy when I learned about it, but now I’m convinced. I did some research and found that more pro players are now starting to use this technique as well. I found it on www.powerbatting.com. What do you think about it?

The answer to that question is one that is constantly debated. From a personal stand point, you cannot treat the superstar any differently than the weakest person on your bench. You need the team to function together if you plan to be successful. Allowing the star to dictate his or her own agenda will undermine your credibility and the happiness of your team. I hope this helps.

Bart,

I understand your position and enjoy those who are willing to coach/ teach/ play baseball the "right way." What age group are we speaking about? No matter what the sport, the game needs to be fun, especially at a young age.

When you take over as the Assistant Coach, you can give subtle hints...You can supervise the dugout and give him the opportunity to coach...or vice versa. You can also explain your position with the runner on 2nd base; it's often better to inform the coach before you instruct your kids in a round-a-bout way.

I recommend expressing your knowledge to the coach in practice once you take over as the assistant coach. It's tough to communicate with coaches as a parent...Hopefully you'll feel more comfortable when you become a coach.

How should I approach my Son's Coach about the 2nd baseman or SS holding a runner on 2nd with 2 outs as if they were a 1st baseman? This obviously, only creates a gaping hole in your defense, when you should be concentrating on the batter! I casually mentioned this during the last game to the assistant coach by saying," I sure hope they don't hit the ball in that hole at 2nd!?" He threw his arms up, as if to say,"Oh well!" I was floored! I have to be careful of the way I say this to the Head Coach, because I am supposed to be taking over as Assistant Coach soon. Any suggestions? Also, How do I tell the Head Coach he should keep his butt in the 3rd base Coaches Box especially, when runners are on base? A couple of games ago a player on 1st tried to advance to 3rd on a single to CF and was thrown out. The Coach was over at the Dugout (where he is normally), talking to the players on the bench!?! His comment to the play...the runner should have known better than to advance on a ball hit to that defensive position! Hmmmm... Then, why have a Coach, if the players should know better? Also, why wasn't he in position to hold the runner? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank You in advance.

Many of us have heard about the Sammy Sosa drama this off season, but it also occurs in little league, high school, and the collegiate level.
