I recently started a coaching blog dedicated to providing content directly from some of the best college and high school coaches. I just started this in the last week so you'll see just the first couple of blog posts, but one is from VCU on their havoc defense and the second post is some baseline out of bounds plays from Notre Dame. Again, this content has come directly from the coaches at these programs, not something I scrapped up off the internet. If you'd like to check it out at www.coachpintar.com and give me some feedback I would appreciate hearing from you guys.

Thanks,

After running a 2-3 match-up zone last season, I am looking to transition into man to man. My biggest reasons are lack of ball pressure and poor rebounding out of the match-up zone. After researching different man to man styles, I think the pack-line defense fits my team the best. I've heard great things about Mack, Bennett, Miller, and Boone's DVDs, but wanted a few opinions of which ones might be the best for someone brand new to the system. Which would be the most beneficial to my coaching staff for installing the defense? I would like to get 2-3 DVDs. Thanks.

Push/Pull Offense (1 reply)

Push/Pull is really a combination of what is now being called Read and React infused with both DDM and Drive and Kick. Push/ Pull can be run as the only phase of the offense or as phase two after a cutter or series of cutters. The concepts can be adapted easily to three, four and five out offensive sets. I have found it most effective when combined with ball reversal, screening and player movement because getting the defense moving to stop screening and cutting then driving is much more difficult. Push/Pull was named for the terminology used to describe player movement especially on the perimeter. When any player dribbles at you, they push you to a position that makes it difficult, spacing wise, for your defender to recover before you shoot or drive. When the player dribbles away from you, you are pulled along with other players to a position that shortens passes back to you and promotes ball reversal, skip and diagonal passes. Post players on the ball side step up to the elbow on baseline wing drive or post up at the block on a middle drive unless they are a face up player then they step to short corner. Two post sets require coordination to allow perimeters to get room to drive. I have used Push/Pull only with minor set adjustments against zone defenses. We simply drive behind cutters making defenders readjust after defending a cutter making it very difficult to help.

Coaches,

As most of you may know, two years ago in the Fall, Hoops King produced and marketed a set five dvds on the SWARM Defense which included three levels of team and drills. I plan on doing the other three levels of that series at some point if sales go well enough to make it a profitable venture for that company because the quality of production was unmatched as was the professionalism of the people involved. What I do plan to do in the interim on my own is produce a series of dvds on various individual defenses using SWARM concepts and sell them through my website. I have tech support from a former student that runs his own company to edit and produce these dvds. I have both a high quality camera and microphone to insure quality visual and sound quality. I have contacted a local college to do white board sessions in their team room. All I need is HS coaches willing to have their team be filmed learning the SWARM Defense at one of my clinics in their gym. I will reduce the cost of the clinic since the content will be for upcoming dvd production and sales. Please contact me if you are interested. Topics are listed below.

1-2-2 Wasp, 1-1-3 Hornet or Mosquito, 1-3-1 Spider, 2-3 Scorpion, Switching M2M/ Yellow Jacket [HC] or Mad dog [FC], Stinger Junk Defense, Even Front FC Match Up Press, Odd Front FC Match Up Press
SWARM D vs Offensive Sets and Actions: Four Out, Five Out, High Low, Two Guard Spread, 1-4 and Stack Sets, Ball Screen O
Matt Bollant at Illinios new school, new team, would be nice to see more than one practice.
Geno Auriemma- cant go wrong with this guy.
Muffet McGraw - Notre Dame has been to two straight championship games
Sherri Coale - Her first one was probably the best I've seen so far.
Mathew Mitchell - Wildcats should have another good year

I am going to be taking over a basketball team that has a ton of talent back and its two best players are a post player and point guard. I'm probably going to face some triangle and 2 throughout the year. Does anyone have any good sets that they have used in the past that I could run and still get some great looks for these kids? Thanks in advance.
