Mary Wise series is very basic, perhaps most appropriate for middle school age (or younger) and beginning level HS players that have the need for developing the most fundamental skill set. The Becoming a Champion series covers the fundamental skills at a bit more intermediate level. Designed for someone who is already in the sport, not a true beginner. This series may be more appropriate for working with the high school age players. Both are excellent series that will give you the essentials of developing skills.

I am looking at setting videos for my daughter. She plays 16-1s club volleyball, not top elite but maybe second tier, and will be starting 6-1 setter as a junior on varsity next year (third year as starting setter). She played up as 8th grader on her high school team. Unfortunately this year she tried switching to a new club, and the training is below expectations, so I'm trying to add private lessons, camps, and self-directed training to keep her game progressing.
Advice on which of these DVDs to buy?
Setting for Team Success
Dunning "Taking your setting to the next level"
Complete "Next level" Dunning series
Becoming a Champion Volleyball Player, 50 Adv. Tips
Fast Attack First Tempo Offense
Any dvds I buy would probably be shared with her HS coach and teammates so I can invest $100+.

I have both sets. I would say Shymansky's videos are geared more for the advanced player. Although he does give some very insightful instruction and training for the beginner also, overall it is for the advanced athlete.

On another note, his entire passing training is based on non-linear passing versus a traditional linear passing method without qualification. In my opinion, linear passing should be taught to the younger athlete as the foundation for their training, and then graduate that athlete to the non-linear method.

Coach Lamb provides the proper armswing technique and thoroughly explains the drills. The players' skill or strength may not be at the level to perform the drill correctly on a constant basis. While the demonstrators may get "sloppy" at times, the information presented is great. Other customers have sent excellent reviews of this video and really enjoy the information presented. If you're looking for a more advanced video, I suggest you looking at the Bond Shymansky Series.

In the description of the DVD "Advanced Technique Training: Hitting, Serving, & Blocking" (Bond Shymandsky) it says:

"Also included are the roll shot, the deep tip, and the sweep shot."

I've never heard of anyone refer to the 'sweep shot' in volleyball... was just wondering what type of hit it's referring to. A wipe/tool off the block maybe?? If anyone knows please post the answer!

Also, I'm looking for a good DVD that emphasizes different attacking options for an outside hitter... eg. hitting cross, hitting through the seam, down the line, tooling off the block, deep tips, topspin dinks etc.

Is this Bond Shymandsky DVD any good on that, or should I be looking at something else? I'm after something reasonably advanced to take my hitting to the next level... so I don't want a video that spends most of it's time describing how to do a simple spike.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks, sb :D

This is not the best tape out there and I would not suggest it. The drills presented from beginning to end seem to contradict the original points. The tape begins with some very thoughtful and insightful progressive drills that emphasize high elbows and how to get them there. By the end of the video, we see drills that pull away from that and don't encourage the same attention to detail. The latter drills presented are simply sloppy. It's also somewhat disappointing that not once do we see any player in the video actually attack a volleyball. It would be nice to see players being given some more dynamic situations and corrective instruction by coach Lamb; or at least some corrective commentary.

Great drills in the beginning, but the tape as a whole leaves a lot to be desired.
