The final Diamond League meet of the season should be a doozy, with several events coming down to the final meet to decide a champion. Highlighting these events is the men’s 100m dash, with Tyson Gay and Richard Thompson locked in a tie atop the Diamond League standings with 8 points apiece. Either could take the crown with a victory in this race, although Gay seems to be the surer bet to win seeing as he as downed both Usain Bolt and Asafa Powell this season and has posted a world leading 9.78 this year. Meanwhile, Lolo Jones’ once dominant hold on the 100m hurdle title has disintegrated into a first place tie with Canada’s Priscilla Lopes-Schliep, who has won three of her last four races. Other athletes to watch include new world record holder David Rudisha (800m), Allyson Felix (200m & 400m), and Blanka Vlasic (High Jump). You can watch all of these exciting events and athletes LIVE www.universalsports.com or on Universal Sports TV!

This week’s Diamond League Meet at Zurich promises to be as exciting as the previous two (which saw Tyson Gay beat Usain Bolt head-to-head, then post the fastest time of the season in the 100m). Fresh off of her double victory (200m and 400m) in London, Allyson Felix looks to capture the Diamond League crown in the 400m this week. Lolo Jones is also looking to respond this week after a recent rough patch has caused her seemingly insurmountable lead in the 100m hurdles to dwindle down to a first place tie with Priscilla Lopes-Schliep. David Oliver, who has arguably been the most dominant sprinter in this year’s Diamond League, will also return to the track for the 110m hurdles. You can watch all of the above, plus much more, at www.universalsports.com!

The highlight of this Friday’s Diamond League meet in Paris has to be the matchup between Jamaican sprinters Usain Bolt and Asafa Powell in the 100m dash. While Bolt has been out with injury for most of the season, Powell has dominated the event, posting a league leading 9.82s in the process. Bolt is, of course, the world’s best sprinter with his unreal world record of 9.58.
A good steeplechase runner should be fairly good at going over a hurdle, as the technique is the same...just not as many of them. The water jump is where most athletes lose a lot of time, so I would spend time on developing their form, technique, and strategy for going over that barrier. Train them as a distance runner but work on hurdles twice a week. Hurdles fall over easier and hurt less than using the barrier all the time.

Stress the importance of technique and incorporate drills. It doesn't matter how fast you are - it really comes down to technique and form over the hurdles and maintaining your 3 step rhythm between the hurdles. If you have athletes that are 4 stepping, it would be ideal to change them to a 3 step and there is a progression for doing so (see DVD). If they can 3 step, they will have the same lead leg over the hurdles...if they 4 step, they will have to learn how to lead with both legs which is more difficult to do. If you can convert them to a 3 step approach, they will start seeing faster times.

Hello,

My Name is Tim Wells,

I’m the founder and creator of the Percy Knox Invitational Track and Field Meet. In the past five years, this meet has grown into one of the largest track and field meets in California and neighboring states.

Our meet has pick up endorsements from notable corporations such as: Nike, Marriott, City of Santa Clarita, College of the Canyons, USC, Cal State Northridge, and Los Angeles Valley College.

I’m calling on ALL Facebook Users to reach out and open up their hearts to help save this meet which has touched so many of our kids across the state.

Unlike traditional track and field meets, the Percy Knox Invitational shares its proceeds with the local high schools track and field programs. Over the course of five years, we have helped raised over $65,000 to give to the local schools.

With the current state of our economy, school districts across America are struggling to keep their doors and after school programs open. We must find new ways to mentor our kids and provide them with a safe environment. Many of the parks and recreation type programs are just not there anymore. This void must not be allowed to fester and become filled by the inter city gangs.

We have made donation in the form of equipment, free entry into our meet, and cash donations. We have donated to various schools across California.

Here is a small demographic sample of some of the schools that we have reached out and donated to: Washington Prep, Dorsey, Crenshaw, Rancho Verde, Long Beach Poly, Fremont, Paramount, Inglewood, James Logan (No. Cal), Oceanside, Lawndale, Lynwood, Carson, Saint Mary’s, Golden Valley, Valencia, Pasadena, Taft, Palisades, St. Bernard, Lincoln, Cleveland, Reseda, Burroughs, Paraclete, Inglewood, Leuzinger, Serra, El Camino Real, Birmingham, Centennial (Compton), Highland, Artesia, and Marshall just to name a few

Like most businesses, our meet is in dire need of help; no one is going to help out these kids if we don’t. We can sit around and wait to see if the government is going to bail us out or we can try and fix it ourselves.

This year our event will feature a concert with Johnny Gill (My, My, My), Johnny Kemp (Just got paid), and the Sister Sledge (we are family). These artists have step up to the plate to help raise revenue to keep this meet alive.

Its not about track and field or sports programs in general; it’s about our kids. We are calling on anyone who could help us: churches, businesses, social groups and individual people who can donate their time, money, and support.

No donation is too small, we are asking for the pennies that you throw into the streets, the small change that you leave behind at the store. Mainly we need whatever support you can give us.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE!!! Pledge your support today.

Hello Coach,

It’s that time again when most coaches are sitting down planning their track and field season for 2008. I would like to once again personally thank everyone who supported the Percy Knox Invitational™ last year.

The meet date has been changed to Friday March 21st & Saturday March 22nd. The date was changed due to the request of many schools to move the date up a week, in order to have more time to prepare their runners. Friday will be a Twilight Distance Carnival with the field events and the sprint running events being held on Saturday.

2007 track season; the 3rd annual Percy Knox Invitational™ came on strong and heavy with its line up of schools and athletes. Out of 330 track and field meets held in California, we were rated #3 overall, only second to Mt. Sac and Arcadia Invitational.

We were one of four high school track and field meets recommended by USA track and field magazine as the meet to attend in Southern California. The meet was also one of three Invitational track meets that had more state contenders than any other invitational. We had some of California’s most elite boys and girls high school track and field athletes.

Like any new business; we had our share of mishaps. 2005, 2006, and 2007 meets, we had the host schools run our invitational track meets with the proceeds being divided among them.

With the growth of the 2007 meet, it was too overwhelming for our 2007 host school’s to properly run the meet as smoothly as it could have been ran.

As Chairman of the foundation, I took full responsibility for the mishaps that occurred in the running of this meet. I have taken new steps to insure: the proper, and the timely running of next years meet.

A lot has changed for us at the Percy Knox Foundation since last season. I would like to share a few of our new changes for 2008.

New The City of Santa Clarita will be joining us in co-hosting and running the 2008 track and field meet.

New James Logan (Northern California) and Long Beach Poly will co host the meet, but they will not be running the meet as previous host schools in the past.

New The College of the Canyons is now the permanent home of the Percy Knox Invitational™

We have schools from New York, Texas, and Jamaica already trying to make plans on attending our 2008 meet.

In honor of the 2008 Olympic year, we will be honoring ten of our past Southern California Olympians, plus we will also run and honor a kids 100 meters Special Olympics event.

We will continue to donate funds to various High Schools and Jr. Colleges track and field programs.

New The meet is now a two day meet, Friday March 21st & Saturday March 22nd
Friday will be a Twilight Distance Carnival. This will keep the meet from running too long.

· The track committee has agreed to keep the meet with no standards. This will allow every school to bring a team instead of just elite athletes.

· New Athletes will have a choice between awards: trophy or medal.

· We will run up to nine heats vs. three like most meets. Awards will be issued to the first three finishers.

· Low entry fees. For $250.00, you will be able to enter your boy’s and girl’s teams both nights and for $150 you can enter a single team.

I would like for you to strongly consider attending our meet. We are fast on our way to our goal of spreading $250,000 around to various High School’s and Jr. Colleges. Together we can all make this work. We are the meet of the people; this is your meet, where everyone comes out a winner.

Thanks again,

There isn't a DVD for the Iowa Track Clinic (and their won't be). We're currently taking registrations for the clinic itself.

With this said, we'll be producing DVDs with some of the same clinicians. These DVDs will not be their clinic presentation; instead, they'll cover other topics and physically present their presentation / demonstrations.

Kelly,
I'm glad you are willing to work on starts with your daughter. This is a very important aspect of sprinting. We have a couple of videos that discuss sprints and starts:
[b:4db1950d57]Becoming a Champion Sprinter[/b:4db1950d57]
[b:4db1950d57]Errors & Corrections[/b:4db1950d57]
While these videos discuss starts, they also include information on sprints, strides, relays, etc. Currently, we don't have a video specifically for starts. Our Becoming a Champion Series is targeted toward the youth; this would be an excellent video if you're wanting to share the video with the athletes. We will be releasing a series in a couple of months that feature the LSU coaching staff. These videos provide excellent information, and starts are discussed thoroughly. I recommend viewing the Becoming a Champion video, and look for the new series this summer!
Thanks!
