Description

with Eric Guerrero,
Oklahoma State University Head Assistant Wrestling Coach;
Distinguished Member of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame (2014);
3x NCAA Champ at Oklahoma St. (4x All American);
2004 Olympian; 2003 World Cup Champion;
2x USA FILA junior world freestyle champion;
head coach for the USA at the 2009 FILA Junior Freestyle World Championships

Eric Guerrero dominated the wrestling landscape from 1995 to 2005, winning three NCAA championships at Oklahoma State, two junior world freestyle championships, a world cup title and claiming a spot on the 2004 US Olympic team. Throughout this great run, Guerrero was nearly unstoppable from his feet. His go-to move was the wrap arm single.

Now, for the first time ever, Guerrero shares the secrets to this potent attack.

In this unique instructional wrestling DVD, Guerrero works backward starting with finishes for the wrap arm, moving to penetration technique, and finally covering set-ups.

Finishes
Championships are won by the wrestler who can score from the situations that no one expects them to score from - if you can't finish a takedown, you can't score points. Guerrero takes you step-by-step through the proper technique to score from a wrap-arm single. You will learn the best grip to use, how to use leverage to finish the move and how to create angles that will give you the best opportunity to score on the mat.

Guerrero breaks down five common defenses to the wrap arm single and how to beat each for a score. You will learn what to do if your opponent tries to control the knee, hit a hip block, stuff your head and square up, grab on for a stalemate or peel your hands away. His counters focus on a limp arm action and constant motion to keep your opponent off balance.

Penetration
Discover the key to making your opponent "buckle & brace" when you penetrate. Guerrero demonstrates a drill that will train you to go shoulder to thigh with your opponent setting you up for a quick change-off and finish.

Set-ups
Use inside control to effectively set-up your opponent for a wrap arm single. Guerrero shows how to disguise the wrap arm giving you the element of surprise.

From there he shows five set-up techniques:

  • Elbow Push: Force your opponent to dig inside and draw his leg into you.
  • Head Tap: Distracts your opponent, allowing you to drop to his leg.
  • Wrist control: Roll your wrist outside to open up your opponent's leg.
  • Wrist Pull: A very subtle set-up that triggers the instinct to defend the immediate position and opens up your opponent's leg for a score.
  • Misdirection: "Sell" one side of the body, forcing your opponent to put his weight on the other side, keeping the leg planted in the mat and a stationary target to defend.

Coach Guerrero does an excellent job breaking down this technique. He shows you how to quickly get to your opponent's leg, which limits his chance to defend and improves your chances to score. Add it to your takedown library today!

45 minutes. 2010.

This is a great video. There is good information here for all levels but I think it is best for an advanced wrestler who already has a single leg to take his technique to the next level. There is some really interesting content here that I have not seen elsewhere. The title of the video may have done it a disservice. "Arm wrap single" is a confusing term. A better title would be "Advanced Single Leg".

Overall this is a very solid DVD. Some thoughts: 1) About 3/4s of the video are dedicated to finishes. He shows a lot of good stuff, particularly with beating the limp knee, although it will be familiar to most wrestlers. Good details, philosophy. Spends about 10 minutes at the beginning getting into the proper body mechanics. Explains the minutia of everyone move he is showing. 2) The penetration section is kind of lacking. He basically points out one or two details. Doesn't explain how to teach the penetration step to beginners (as someone who works with many beginners, I was kind of hoping for this). 3) The setups section is OK. He shows five set-ups with the inside control. Pretty fundamental stuff. Would have wanted to see more. But he does an excellent job of explaining everything. Overall: Very well done. He explains almost everything in great detail, both technique and body mechanics. Covers a number of things. Everything is clearly explained, and he avoids the problem of talking too much. Shows everything 2-3 times from multiple angles. I guess I would have wanted, though, to see a little bit more advanced stuff on the finishes, some additional time dedicated to penetration, and a few more set-ups.

Eric Guerrero points out some truly great observations -- the sort which make you think, "Why didn't I think of that?!" or "Why didn't I see that?!" Also, his technique is so precise and is so efficient that it begins to make you reevaluate the traditional ways in which we've all been taught the sweep-single: it's so much more direct, much less time, and much more forceful. Very nice DVD.

Can someone clarify for me what the "arm wrap single" is? I have never heard of it and I can't tell from the sample clip. Is it a head inside/sweep single or a head outside/high crotch? Thanks.

Championship Productions replies:
It's a head inside sweep single. Some may call it a swing single, but Guerrero wants to get to the leg as quick as possible and wrap his arm around it instead of "swinging" out to get it. If you have any other questions, just give me a call. 800-873-2730. Chad Bauman Championship Productions

This is a very good video on single legs. Like most OSU dvd's it goes into more detail and adds information you don't commonly see. I like Eric's philosophy of the move and the finishes best. Geat product. A.W.
