Due to the recent rule changes in folkstyle and freestyle wrestling, it has become essential to develop a strategy for wrestling on the edge of the mat. World Team member Chris Bono passes along his strategies for controlling the edge of the mat in both freestyle and folkstyle wrestling. Defensively, Coach Bono demonstrates options on what to do when your back is to the edge. Instruction includes cut the angle, "bang the man," the pressure shot and re-shot. Offensively, he shows how to cut off your opponent and keep him on the edge, as well as how to score when the opponent tries to kick off the mat. The freestyle instruction includes tips for par terre wrestling near the edge of the mat. These tips and strategies will not only give you scoring options, but also keep the referee from calling penalty points on you!
