Coach Guerrero is known throughout the world for his dominant wrestling style from his feet. In this video, he gives you the secrets to what it takes to be fast and dominant on your feet.

Coach Guerrero starts with the essential motor skills needed to perform effective takedowns and works backwards from penetration to finishes and to set-ups. Throughout this video, Guerrero emphasizes the importance basic motor skills (introduced in the beginning of this video) as he demonstrates his proven techniques.

Motor Skills
Wrestlers foot speed and agility are skills developed from lots of repetition. Coach Guerrero starts by showing four skills and two drills that help develop foot speed and develop excellent wrestling position. These skills and drills reinforce essential motor skills that every wrestler needs to know in order to execute successful takedowns.

Penetration
If a wrestler has a great penetration step and great finish, he will score. Coach Guerrero introduces you to a couple drills that can be used to develop the finer points of effective penetration to stay in good position when you attack the legs.

Finishes
No takedown is ever scored from a great set-up and great penetration. Takedowns are scored only after a great finish and that is why Coach Guerrero starts with finishes early in this video and emphasizes the little things that will help you finish your takedowns. He'll show you how to finish with the front headlock series, which gives you the chance to finish in any situation your opponent tries to defend. Guerrero delivers several drills to help you finish a takedown - even from a bad position.

Set-ups and Takedowns
See all of the basic leg attacks you need to develop into a great wrestler. Guerrero demonstrates the best possible set-ups for each takedown and gives you drills to use to make them effective. The 2-on-1, a very effective but often overlooked move in youth wrestling, is covered in detail. The 2-on-1 is a great way to handle an opponent who tries to avoid contact. You'll also see how to set up your takedowns with inside control, wrist control and collar ties. Chaining your setups will allow you to stay one step ahead of your opponent, keeping him off balance, and giving you an easier penetration into your attack.

Coach Guerrero also gives you every imaginable scenario encountered when performing takedowns and how you can finish. These drills will make you the ultimate chain wrestler!

Head position is your first line of defense and a great way to create counter offense. You will learn four drills that emphasize head and body positioning.

Coach Guerrero provides a variety of techniques that can be used to defend common scenarios and create counter attacks. He also demonstrates drills to help train these techniques.

  • From the knees - Learn to score using a variety of methods from headlocks to go-behinds.
  • From the mat - Opponent has your leg? Check out these defensive techniques.
  • Leg in the air - With one leg in the air or both legs wrapped in a double, your opponent might think he has you. That's when you score!
You'll learn excellent, but rarely demonstrated defensive counter moves that result in scoring. The barrel-roll double leg counter, high-chest step around when you are locked around your opponent's chest, and a single-in-the-air counter which results in a 5-point score.

AAU Wrestling Skills Series: Scoring from the Top Position

with Eric Guerrero,
Oklahoma State University Head Assistant Wrestling Coach;
Distinguished Member of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame (2014);
3x NCAA Champ at Oklahoma St. (4x All American);
2004 Olympian; 2003 World Cup Champion;
2x USA FILA junior world freestyle champion;
head coach for the USA at the 2009 FILA Junior Freestyle World Championships

The top position is where wrestlers show dominance over their opponents. The ability to pin will allow you to recover from mistakes and come from behind to win. Eric Guerrero shows you how to dominate from the top position in youth wrestling. Coach Guerrero not only emphasizes the techniques used to be dominant from the top position, but also the drills that can be used to ride and break the will of your opponent.

Key Skills for Riding and Breakdowns
Develop the precise positioning required to break down and ride your opponent. Guerrero talks about having a good chop philosophy, which includes driving, keeping your head up, staying in good position, and capturing the wrist. Off that philosophy, he teaches three different breakdown techniques, starting with the Head Lever Breakdown for when your opponent does not breakdown off the chop.

Guerrero also shows a Head Lever to a Half Nelson pinning combination. From there he teaches the proper technique to a Spiral Ride and shows two situations of how and when to use the Spiral Ride. The final breakdown that Guerrero shows is an Ankle Chop, which is more of a set-up for the Chop that he showed earlier.

Pinning Combinations
Once you have broken down your opponent, you will need pinning combinations to score points from the top. Guerrero delivers the:

  • Half Nelson
  • Chicken Wing
  • Bar Series
  • Crossface Cradle
In addition, you will see how to put legs in as well as where a wrestler should be while riding legs. Guerrero goes through several types of turns from legs and he emphasizes the importance of each position. At the end of the video, he shows how to tie everything together and how to teach yourself to chain wrestler from the top while you are drilling or going live.

Techniques and demonstrations for performing the most common moves from the top position are explained and with the young wrestler in mind. The advantage of these techniques is that they are basic techniques that will enable even a novice coach or athlete to teach and learn quickly. These techniques can also be used as building blocks for wrestlers at any level.

Top wrestling is a sign of dominance. This DVD is essential in building an effective top position wrestler!

AAU Wrestling Skills Series: Scoring from the Bottom Position

with Eric Guerrero,
Oklahoma State University Head Assistant Wrestling Coach;
Distinguished Member of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame (2014);
3x NCAA Champ at Oklahoma St. (4x All American);
2004 Olympian; 2003 World Cup Champion;
2x USA FILA junior world freestyle champion;
head coach for the USA at the 2009 FILA Junior Freestyle World Championships

The bottom position can either be a defensive position that drains a wrestler's energy or an outstanding opportunity to score points.

Bring former Olympian and 3x NCAA Champion Eric Guerrero into your wrestling room to show you how to get out and score from the bottom position. Coach Guerrero not only emphasizes the techniques used to get out, he also trains the motor skills you need to properly perform these moves.

What makes this video different from others is the focus on chain wrestling - putting multiple moves together before escaping. You rarely score on your first move, but it creates separation from your opponent, so that successive moves will have a higher rate of success.

Guerrero starts with several drills to develop the necessary motor skills to perform bottom wrestling techniques. A key drill you'll see is the Roll Drill. It improves a wrestler's ability to know where he is on the mat and improves his ability to land belly down. Motor skills for chain wrestling include:

  • Back Arch and Rotate
  • Roll Drill
  • Stand-Up Drill
  • Hip Heist Drill
  • Cross Hand Sit Out Drills (both a hip heist and cutback)
  • Granby Roll
You will learn what it takes to go from being stuck on the bottom to getting out and scoring points. Guerrero does a great job breaking down and simplifying technique, so coaches and athletes can understand and execute quickly. He covers:
  • Stand-Up - To become a champion wrestler, the ability to get back to your feet is essential. You'll learn the basic technique for executing a standup, how to use your opponent's pressure to stand-up, and clearing away without putting yourself in a high risk situation.
  • Sit-Out - Without proper technique, your opponent will chop you to the mat before you can even try these moves. Guerrero shows you how to maximize your success with the sit-out to a hip heist and a sit out cutback.
  • Granby Roll - With the proper movement and momentum, a well timed Granby is very difficult to stop.
  • Switch - Learn the nuances to execute a proper switch. There are many key components that make this move effective, but they have to be in place to be devastating.
Coach Guerrero believes that bottom wrestling is the great neutralizer in a match. This video is a great tool to develop young wrestlers and to correct basic errors in veteran wrestlers. Implement these techniques into your arsenal and you will become great off the bottom!
