Practice Solutions: Planning for Success

When watching Mary Wise it is easy to see her unconditional love for the game in every aspect of her coaching. Wise feels that above all, the most important value a coach can instill in a player is a love for the game. In Practice Planning Solutions, Wise begins by presenting four themes that echo in all of her practices. These themes encompass the head and the heart for learning and competing, while having fun and loving the game. Wise presents eight principles for helping a coach establish a pattern for effective practice planning. In addition, she discusses seven areas of emphasis she feels are essential for coaching younger players. The theme of these concepts is to create an atmosphere of success with ideas for modifications that can easily be implemented to ensure a successful and fun practice for younger players. To bring it all together, Wise offers a bird's eye view of her teaching and coaching methodology by taking a team of young players through seven different drills that reflect the model for an effective practice that challenges players with game-like situations.
