He received the "Nye" award as the most Outstanding Athlete at Colorado State his senior year and later was voted in to the Colorado State "Hall of Fame."

He has an outstanding grasp of all of the track and field events and his program has produced over 90 NCAA All-American in a wide variety of events. Coach Hessel has spoken at coaches clinic in nearly every state in the union covering nearly all events. While at CSU he was the first coach in the conference to break BYU's long time strangle hold on the conference title for both men and women.

He has written four books: Striving for Perfection in Middle Distance Running, The Motivated Coach, The Spirit of a Champion and Instincts in Coaching Track and Field.

I recommend this book for anyone who is new to the world of track and field. My son just started track and this book provided me a ton of insight. As a former college tennis coach, I especially enjoyed the coaching stories Coach Hessel shares in the book.

It may seem odd that an author of a book would write a review on ones own book. However, I am absolutely confident that every coach and every parent will gain tremendous insight into the sport of track and field for both the high school and collegiate ranks by reading this book Del G. I had the opportunity to have Del Hessel as my college coach in the early ''70s. Even then, he was a tremendous coach. Personally, he completely changed my life through application of his principle of "Learning to Try Harder". I have stayed connected with Coach Hessel through the years, and have watched with admiration the results of his coaching and leadership skills on athletes and teams alike. Anyone involved in the coaching of track and field will benefit from this book. It is packed with knowledge, experience, and wisdom. You will be a better coach if you read it!

Coach Hessel has written a concise Track and Field Primer to be used by athletes, Athletic Directors, coaches and parents. Coach Hessel has been around. Everywhere that he has been he has been highly successful. He has that vitality, knowledge, and most importantly, he knows how to motivate and bring out the best in young people. If you walked closely with Coach Hessel around the vast array of athletes and coaches at the Olympic Trials you'd be amassed at the adulation, respect and recognition given Del by coaches, athletes and sponsors. Surely, some of his secret methods that led to great success are found in this book. Gary Shepard, former athlete, University Track record holder, Colonel USAF.
