Description

with Dennis Nobles,
Florida State University Assistant Coach (Jumps);
2003 Women's National Assistant Coach of the Year (Jumps)

Dennis Nobles utilizes two former All-American athletes to demonstrate the finer points of the long jump.

In Part 1 of this presentation, Coach Nobels shares Long Jump Menchanics. Nobels begins with a thorough explanation of the biomechanical challenges through turning the body into a projectile off of the runway sprint. He next reviews three "distance determinants" that are essential to understand for maximal jump performance. Nobels shares his mantra of on task, on time and on target to describe the importance of developing consistency with the first step. Next, Nobels breaks down the run and details stride numbers for various levels of athleticism and age. He shares a drill he uses with his athletes to develop a consistent feel for hitting the board consistently without having to detract from the approach and watch the board as it is approaching. Nobles covers the technical aspects of the last runway step and details the proper take off angle. The "in the air" phase is the next breakdown area. Nobels teaches the skill sets for a hang and hitch kick flight, and provides a simple 3-step drill that quickly teaches an athlete how to execute the hitch kick. The final technical breakdown is the landing.

In Part 2: Strength Development, Nobels delivers 12 different exercises, including the proper mechanics of three Olympic lifts: Squat, Clean and snatch.

In Part 3: Warm Up, Nobles takes you through a dynamic 15 exercise warm up that prepares the body for event specific training and technique drills.

In Part 4, Nobels returns to the runway and pit and breaks down drills for the runway, final steps, and the landing.

57 minutes. 2007.
