From dynamic warm-ups to live, indoor batting practice and virtually every on-field skill, 3x Conference USA Championship coach Kyla Holas provides complete access to all areas of her team's practice.
Practice #1:This practice progresses from individual drills to whole team drills. This will help you create a practice that will maximize whatever facilities you may have at your disposal. With an emphasis on doing the little things, Coach Holas takes her team through drills that cover every defensive position on the diamond, base running, tag ups, reads and leads, ground ball progressions, outfield short hops and a wide array of hitting drills that show how to attack pitches throughout the strike zone.
Practice #2:In the second day of practice, you will discover the fundamentals and aspects of the game that the University of Houston covers in their daily practices. The offensive drills show how to improve focus and execute one plan while in the batting cage. You will learn how to provide feedback to correct hitting flaws. Defensively, the coaching staff uses the entire field to work on a specific aspects of the game: The outfielders concentrate on short hops, while the infielders work on fielding bunts and flips. Other drills simulate game situations to develop team communication.
Practice #3:Coach Holas takes her team through an alternate warm-up to keep her athletes focused on the benefits of proper stretching and dynamic movements. Holas starts very basic with run throughs in the infield to gain proper throwing and fielding technique prior to going live off of the bat. This will show you how to break down different skills and develop muscle memory while focusing on fundamentals. The outfield focuses on picking up balls off of the fence and relays. Coach Holas combines the infield and outfield for "tweeners," which focus on communication between teammates. To conclude they brought it all together for live batting practice.
Throughout the three practices, Coach Holas describes what they're doing and why. Here you get to watch one of softball's most successful coaches guiding her players through complete practices. You not only get great insight into how to structure practice, but all the little tips, all the pointers, adjustments, corrections, and guidance throughout this 3-disc set add up to a lot of great coaching.
402 minutes (3 DVDs). 2012.
I met Coach Holas at clinic and she was super helpful on some pitching questions. I was looking forward to watching these discs based on the highlights I saw. Unfortunately, this disc is a lot of music and little coach talk. When there is coach talk it is hard to tell where she is and who she is talking to. Way to much time is spent showing basic stretching and things in a similar vein. I suspect this might be from a era that is bit dated now where this style of disc was the norm. If was recommend a better choice look at George Wares or John Tschida dics. I was sorely disappointed in this disc for the money.
