Be prepared for any game situation this season.

In this instructional soccer DVD, Butch Lauffer provides coaching points for implementing structure and tactics according to four man up / man down game-changing situations.

Coach Lauffer uses on-field demonstration and detailed computer animations to illustrate the tactics, formations and soccer principles that need to be employed relative to these game situations. The situations Lauffer discusses are:

  • Winning with a Man Down - Lauffer covers two formations, a 4-4-1 and a 4-3-2 to help you protect the lead. The 4-3-2 adds a striker to put pressure on back players and help defend further up the field. You will learn how to get the ball into opposing field as quickly as possible and use the width and depth of the field to create space and to spread the defense while making the opposition chase the ball.
  • Losing with a Man Down - Lauffer's goal here is to counter attack and get the ball into the penalty area as often as possible to create the best goal scoring opportunities. He suggests using the 4-1-3-1 formation for its centralized positioning and defensive numbers that also translate, offensively, into breaking out into counter attacks with penetrating runs from deep positions.
  • Winning with a Man Up - In this situation, defining the enemy late in the game is key for your team to be successful - late in the game the enemy is the clock, not the other team. Lauffer breaks down the 4-4-2, which will allow you to get the ball in the opponent's half of the field and circulate the ball from side-to-side; forcing the opposition to chase the ball and kill time off the clock.
  • Losing with a Man Up - In this situation, instinctively the winning team will sit deeper in their area and invite you to possess the ball in their half. Lauffer likes to employ a 3-4-3 to get extra players in certain parts of the field to create tactical advantages on the wings that can produce crosses into the penalty area and create 2v1 situations. He also discusses the importance of pressing in this situation, providing tips on where, when and with how many players to press.

As you see all of these tactics played (and more) in action as athletes demonstrate them on the field.

It is not a case of if these situations arise, it's when. Using Lauffer's instruction your squad will be bettered prepared to face these situations when they arise, which will allow your team to successfully handle each.

Throughout his instruction, Lauffer explains how, where and when to pressure the ball on defense and how to possess the ball on offense, depending on the scenario. He emphasizes the importance of keeping formation, playing wide, drawing free kicks, creating 1 v 1 and 2 v 1 opportunities, and more.

Shape your formations to maximize the situation with these proven strategies from Butch Lauffer.
