The value of Vern Gambetta's writings are the unique perceptions that he brings to the field. Immersed in physical training and possessing experience training professional sports teams, Vern can reduce complexity to simplicity. Some of his best gems in this book: mental discipline vs. mental toughness, training is a means to an end, to take an athlete to his/her limits in their chosen sport; instead of searching for that 1-2% that would make the difference, concentrate on the 98%; the only to learn to race is to race; just making them tired is not making them better;select a mode of strength training that is appropriate for the sport that you are training for;redefine failure as a learning opportunity; greater improvement in running mechanics comes from proper strength training; the most effective roads on the functional path are progressive and sequential; surviving vs. thriving on a workout;build a pitcher from the ground up; you can't launch a cannon from a canoe;you can be coaching and have one experience thirty times, or you can have 30 different experiences; win the workout;stress, recover, improve, that's all training is; on using time: do a little bit more often; the body is a link system;if we restrict movement in one part, another part must make up for that movement.
