This is your all access pass to three days of practice with 3x State Champion Benilde-St. Margaret's High School (MN) ice hockey team. Follow the team through three practice sessions as the squad prepares to open their regular season. The practice sessions include individual skill development on and off the ice, as well as team tactical play.
Head coach Ken Pauly guides you through a number of up-tempo, attacking style drills that will help your team generate more scoring opportunities. It also includes drills for defensive zone positioning, neutral zone transitions and small area games.
Coach Pauly provides hours of drills that you can adopt and use with your team. He includes drills for shooting, breakouts, defensive zone positioning, neutral zone transitions and small area games. All of this will give you great ideas for weekly practices that can be utilized at Squirt, Pee Wee, Midget, High School and advanced level hockey programs.
Practice 1 - Defensive Zone CoverageThe focus this practice is defensive zone coverage, with emphasis on assignments for wings. After beginning the practice with passing drills to warm up the hands, Coach Pauly initiates a 2-on-2 small area game. The team then moves to a 3-on-3 drill down low to continue the focus on defensive zone coverage, which is later expanded to 5-on-5. He then runs two drills to work on the physical aspects of the game, a bump and run drill and a gauntlet along the walls to teach players, "contact confidence" and competing through physical play. Those drills are followed by a drill that works on defensive zone coverage and forechecking. The day wraps up with a back checking drill.
Practice 2 - A Scoring PracticeThe session starts with a passing drill with both close and cross-ice passing. This is followed by a small area 3-on-2 drill. The team then break into four stations to work on rebounds, screens and tipped shots, one timers, and quick releases. The second part of practice is focused on the power play. The Red Knights work on a 5-on-0 breakout and then set up in the attacking zone for a shot. Two forecheckers are then added to the drill. Next is a 5-on-3 with defenders having their stick turned around, again to focus on puck movement on the power play. The practice concludes with some off ice strength and conditioning.
Practice 3 - Passing and Quick Puck MovementThis session will teach your players how to make accurate passes and think "transition." The warm up for this practice is a neutral zone passing drill. Next is a 4-on-4 drill where players are required to pass the puck every two seconds, followed by a 3-on-0 line rush drill focused on making good passes. The Red Knights then run a neutral zone transition drill that concludes with a 3-on-1. Lastly Coach Pauly runs the team though a 1-on-1 drill that moves to a 2-on-1 situation.
