Functional speed and size comprise the winning edge, according to Coach Hoeppner, who presents a winter program that is making an impact on the program at the University of Indiana. Their off-season motto is "If you can run then you can play." Taking a unique approach to team building, his squad is divided into squads comprised of 16 players from different positions on the team. This "Winning Edge" is a combination of activities that include the board push, plyos, cone agilities and bag drills. Other events are the "Prowler," field agilities and running drills. The running workout, called the Indiana Standardized Running Workout, divides the team into five groups, depending on speed only. The distances are 40 and 80 yards at four reps in a specified period of time. Another set of 50-yard sprints has its own set of time and rest periods. This workout gives athletes multiple sprint opportunities as it builds their strength and endurance.
