Troy Calhoun: Zone Run & Play Action Pass Game

Troy Calhoun of the Air Force Academy knows how challenging it is to get an advantage over often physically superior opponents. His use of the inside zone, the outside zone, and the play action passes off of both have allowed Air Force to achieve success under his tutelage.

Inside Zone
Coach Calhoun talks through the specific details of the Inside Zone position by position. The game film he provides doesn't lie as he talks about things such as hand placement on the offensive line and simple reads for the running backs. Calhoun explains the sweep play off the inside zone. He gives the viewer the changes in the blocking scheme to allow the sweep player to attack the perimeter.

Inside Zone Passing Game
Using the orbit series inside zone as the backdrop, the play action pass game related to the inside zone is explained in detail. Simple routes and reads that look exactly like the run play create great opportunities for Air Force to throw the ball down the field.

Wide/Outside Zone
Coach describes the differences in the wide or outside zone from the inside zone. The changes in rules and techniques for the offensive line is very detailed and effective, but still simple for the players.

Wide Zone Passing Game
Coach Troy Calhoun finishes by explaining several naked and boot passing game schemes that Air Force uses off of the wide zone run play. The relatively easy to understand concepts are applied in a variety of formations.

Coach Calhoun provides a wealth of knowledge on the inside and outside zone game, as well as a number of different play action passes off of those base plays. He gives a great amount of information throughout the presentation about the offensive line from his experience at Air Force and in the NFL. Coach is also able to show how to create diversity in both the run and pass game by presenting multiple formations for each play.
