Shotgun Spread Offense: Basics

with Bruce Eien,
Brethren Christian (CA) High School Head Coach

Coach Eien breaks down the basics, and supplements it all with game footage, to introduce you to the Gun Spread Offense. Terminology, formations and motions of the Gun are covered using diagrams and game footage. Basics include player and hole numbering. Also included is the formula that Eien uses to call plays. The formation, motion, series, point of attack and blocking scheme all go into this formula. Eien also breaks down the system of shifting and formation types. This instruction is backed with game footage of different formations including Gun RT, Trips RT, Bunch RT, Empty RT. and Double RT. The Motions are broken down into H, Z and F. Routes available in this system are Quick, Rocket, Stop, Slant, Sit, Pivot, Return, Delay, Fade, Post, Curl, Switch, Dig, Corner, Out, Fade Out, Drag, and Shallow Cross.

Shotgun Spread Offense: Pass Protection and Coverages

with Bruce Eien,
Brethren Christian (CA) High School Head Coach

Coach Eien believes that pass protection and blocking schemes against blitz and stunts can be accomplished with six blockers. Eien covers seven different pass protection packages. Film breakdown gives you a chance to see how effective these blocking schemes are and how the passing game benefits from solid blocking. Another section is dedicated to defensive fronts and coverages that are thrown against the Shotgun Spread. Eien shows how each front and coverage is countered by his offense. Eien shares his insight on why he runs the Shotgun spread - the history, coverages and coaches that have had great influence on his coaching and these fantastic strategies!

Shotgun Spread Offense: Screen Game

with Bruce Eien,
Brethren Christian (CA) High School Head Coach

The screen game is an effective system within the Shotgun Spread Offense that helps defeat the blitz by throwing to receivers and backs. Coach Eien begins with the quick series. He uses game clips to provide coaching points and detailed analysis of four plays from this series. The next phase of the screen game is the H Bubble. Game clips of the H Bubble play emphasize technique and proper execution of this play. Eien also breaks down the X Rocket and the H Rocket - two excellent quick hitting plays that work well against stout pressure. He closes with the F Middle screen. Tell your conference foes to "look out!" because every play in this series presents a problem for blitzing defenses!

Shotgun Spread Offense: Movement Passes

with Bruce Eien,
Brethren Christian (CA) High School Head Coach

Another feature of the popular Shotgun Spread Offense is the movement pass game. In this scheme, the launch points are moved to give the quarterback different points to throw the ball. Movement passes include roll right, gap pass, bootleg pass and waggle pass. Roll right is a trips formation and is the number one pass play for Coach Eien's offense. There are pass and run options that can be run from this set. These include: Deep out, Corner, Dump flat, and QB run, which are also demonstrated. Each play is designed to maximize yardage by exploiting the defense. The Movement Pass game shows ways to keep the defense off guard by moving the pocket for the quarterback!

The Shotgun Spread Offense: Quick Passing Game

with Bruce Eien,
Brethren Christian (CA) High School Head Coach

A major part of this Shotgun Spread Offense is the one- to three-step drop attack known as 'Quick'. As you might guess, the goal of this attack is to get rid of the ball quickly. 'Quick' is broken down into man beater, smash and rub concepts, and Eien provides insight into a number of routes for each. Using game footage, the Quick double slant and nine other plays in this scheme are illustrated by Eien. The drop back game is a five- to seven-step drop. A feature of the drop back game is the horizontal stretch concept. Within this series, five plays add to the versatility of this passing attack. These patterns stretch the opponent from sideline to sideline! Game footage included shows the effectiveness of this passing attack.

The Shotgun Spread Offense: Run Game

with Bruce Eien,
Brethren Christian (CA) High School Head Coach

All good running games open the door for yards in the air, and Coach Eien's Shotgun Spread is no exception! Eien highlights the responsibilities for the quarterback, running back and wings in the run game attack from the Shotgun Spread Offense. Using dozens of game clips, Coach Eien illustrates seven of his most successful plays. He also covers the single wing power run game - known as 'the fat run.' Coach Eien shares the history and research behind this running game. Moving players around into different positions, 'the fat run' becomes several different plays, all of which he diagrams and provides game clips to show their effectiveness.

The Shotgun Spread Offense: Exotics and Trick Plays

with Bruce Eien,
Brethren Christian (CA) High School Head Coach

All good offenses have exotics and trick plays hidden in their playbook. The advantage of these plays is that they are simple to practice but difficult to prepare for and coach against. The trick plays that Coach Eien highlights for the Shotgun Spread are: BYU Formation, QB Throw Back, Diamond (which includes seven unique options), Stack, Left Guard Special (a takeoff on the "fumble-rooski") and Screen Swinging Gate and Stupid Sweep. This DVD concludes with an exhaustive list of resources for football coaches. This is a must-have DVD for all football coaches!
