Quarters Coverage vs. Multiple Formations

Quarters Coverage vs. Multiple Formations

with Bob Valesente,
Green Bay Packers (NFL) Defensive Backs Coach
(from '95 - '98, included Super Bowl XXXI win in '96)

Coach Valesente presents a five-part teaching progression that includes personnel, formation, distribution, responsibility and technique. Recognition of personnel on the field is important - all players must know the personnel on the field. The formation indicates whether the strength is in the running game or passing game. Knowing how the defensive backs react to the snap of the ball is called distribution. Knowing your responsibility as a defender is extremely important. The corner, safety, Mike, SAM, or Will linebackers all have specific responsibilities. Valesente also covers the art of identifying formations. He covers the Trip Set, Weak Flood Set and slot formation. In the slot, all wide receivers are on the same side, with the tight end on the back side. Having a plan for the regular and slot formation is critical. Underneath coverage is highlighted with key coaching points.

43 minutes. 2007.
