Doc Kreis: The Football Coaches Guide to Strength Training - Part I

with Doc Kreis,
UCLA Strength & Conditioning Coach

Doc Kreis' strength training program is comprised of four components: absolute strength, explosive strength, starting strength and reaction strength. A major belief is to pull from the weakest places when building a program. The first phase of strength training deals specifically with ligaments and tendons. Components of the lifting program include power clean, back squat, three quarter squat, squat on toes, bench press and bench press 16." A key development in squatting is to use the 9-foot bar instead of the 7-foot bar. The bench press is an exercise that depends on form and technique. The width of the feet on the squat and bench must be emphasized. Coach Kreis's running program is another key element to his overall strength training. After the warm-up, the sprint, carioca, shuffle and the back pedal complete the running program. By sharing a linebacker specific program, Kreis details all of the lifts for a typical Week 1, Day 1 workout.

Doc Kreis: The Football Coaches Guide to Strength Training - Part II

with Doc Kreis,
UCLA Strength & Conditioning Coach

Building better bodies is the overall goal of all strength coaching. Doc Kreis challenges strength coaches to think outside the box and always be on the alert for new and improved ways to strength their athletes. A big believer in hydration, Kreis discusses the multitude of options available today to keep athletes hydrated. The warm-up exercises at UCLA begin with abdominal exercises. Kreis also discusses the proper technique on the power clean exercise, which starts with coming off the floor and creating momentum. This will develop reaction and starting strength. The Bruins running program is a part of Kreis' overall plan for strength and conditioning, and he shares this entire program with you. Running hills can also provide a great avenue to strength and conditioning on running days. This presentation is very interactive as Coach Kreis fields questions from coaches and provides direct and informative answers.

Doc Kreis: How to Improve Your Football Team's Speed

with Doc Kreis,
UCLA Strength & Conditioning Coach

Doc Kreis breaks down the area of speed like never before. His speed-strength training model is made up of four components: Absolute strength, explosive strength, starting strength and reaction strength. Each component depends on the other for maximum athletic performance. An athlete who is sound is all four components will progress in speed and in strength. Successful performance and survival in competition events requires all four components. The coach is responsible for setting the vision for your players. Key parts of the vision are plan, preparation, and execute. In this program, Speed days are Monday and Friday, while Tuesday and Thursday are for Change of Speed training. Speed training is broken down into the start, the run, and the finish. The "UCLA Football Field Setup" speed course is shown on the overhead and provides a detailed look at the drills and exercises used during the speed and change of speed days. In his enthusiastic style, Coach Kreis explains in detail his program that can be used to make great improvements in speed on the field.

110 minutes. 2007.
