The spread offense is currently dominating the game of football, and therefore, it is important to know how to defend it. Coach Fex believes that the 3-4 defense is effective in defending the spread offense because of its multiplicity. The 3-4 allows many possible variations up front with alignments, movement, twists, blitzes and it is simple to change up the coverage principles. Fex uses the white board to explain his strategies in defending the spread offense and how to keep more defenders than the offense has blockers. He describes defensive personnel, front declaration, static flow and his "Spartan package." In order to show his concepts in action, Fex has players demonstrate on the practice field to explain defensive line characteristics, outside linebacker characteristics, inside linebacker characteristics, "mix it" and static flow. He then utilizes game footage to show plays in action.
