Defending the Spread Offense

The recent popularity of the Spread Offense has forced coaches to prepare consistently for this offensive attack. To be effective and successful today, coaches must know how to defend and defeat the Spread. Coach Coombs believes that a good marriage exists between the 50 defense and defending the Spread. Playing smaller, faster players is an important part of defending the Spread. Deciding between single and double-coverage against receivers is a big consideration. Line-up factors are described by Coombs as well as disguising whether the defense is playing cover 2, 3 or 4. Detailed analysis of cover 2, 3, 4 and Trips Cover 2 are included in Coombs' presentation. The 4 deep, 3 under coverage in Trips puts pressure on the defensive backfield while the right end is the rusher.
