Coaching High School Football: The 3-4 Attacking Defense

As high school coaches, Eric Reis and Rick James understand the challenges of implementing a defensive system with undersized players. The 3-4 defense is a viable option if you lack big bodies on the defensive line. It also allows you flexibility to use many different kinds of rushes to confuse the opposing quarterback, and, it makes it easier to cover multiple offensive formations with adjustments in the secondary. Coach James emphasizes aggressiveness at all positions, discussing the physical and mental characteristics that each player needs to execute his respective role in the 3-4. He also covers the defensive alignments and blitz gaps that he uses with his team. James uses diagrams to reveal a dozen defensive play calls and shares game footage to show the plays in action.
