The Michigan 1-3-1 Zone Defense & Drills

Very well done. Does a great job of going from boards drawings to on the floor demonstratons.

I found several things I can use in this DVD.

This is what a coaching DVD should be. Everything is systematic, and clearly explained. We go from whiteboard to on the court, and coach takes it step by step. He doesn't get ahead of himself, or go back and forth, or go out of order in the way the system is explained. He breaks down most all of the "what if's" (what if they pass it here?), and covers enough detail that you'll have a comprehensive knowledge of his system, without it being too detailed for a high school team to use. The on court demonstrations were useful and mistakes made by players in executing were clearly pointed out.

Obviously, you need to want to apply the unique properties of this defense, and this is not a high pressure trap the ball type defense. But if you want to apply this unique defense this one does a great job of taking things slowly and explaining everything clearly, and covering all the bases in an organized manner.

I absolutely love this dvd. I was looking for a different defense for my highschool girls team and this caught my eye. The principles of the zone are very different compared to what we see and play against. The hardest part for my girls to pick up was the difference in taking away passing lanes and not being on the ball like we would normally be. His breakdown of positions was really good for me to relay to the girls. We implemented this zone defense and it was extremely successful as most coachs went to 2-1-2 like he indicates and the team reacted like they should have. Most teams/coaches had no clue what to do with the gap system this uses.

great dvd. different thought on the 1-3-1 than i usually see. I really like how coach felton breaks it down and teaches the assignments and rotations. easy to follow and comprehend.

I have the 3 most popular 1-3-1 defense videos offered here and this one is by far my favorite. I think that he does the best job of breaking it down and instructing the basics of the 1-3-1 and teaching each positions responsibility. In my opinion, if you are just beginning in the 1-3-1, this is the best tape for it.

It's good. It's not the best 1-3-1 video around but Felton does a nice job explaining the basics.

But know this:

This DVD is the straight zone. No trapping is discussed. No extending is discussed. This is *BASE* 1-3-1 teaching. Nothing at all wrong with that, but if you want a DVD that goes into trapping or adjusting outside of the base, get the Klaas or Blackford DVDs.

This DVD discusses how to handle dribble drives more than the others, (really like the funnel idea) but if you already own the other CP 1-3-1 DVDs you really don't need this one.

One thing also of note: None of the 1-3-1 DVDs (that I have seen) discuss how to handle anything other than a 2-1-2 offense.

What if they run a 1-4 high set? A 3 out 2 in set? None of the DVDs cover that. How do they handle cutters? Screening actions? It would be nice of we had a DVD that covered more than the vanilla 2-1-2 because a lot of teams are going away from that as the counter to the 1-3-1.

One of the best instructional DVDs I have ever purchased. Absolutely fantastic.

I thought this was a very good dvd, very informative. I definitely plan on utilizing the things learned next season. It is very detailed and breaks everything down on the board & on the court.

Great DVD

For the first 30 minutes or so, I thought this DVD was no different from others I have seen about the 1-3-1. However, what sets this one apart is discussion of how to handle dribble penetration and the breakdown drills. The slides in any zone are similar but it's difficult to get good breakdown drills to actually work on them.

Holy Smokes!! This is a 5-Star DVD!!! I wish that I could give it a higher rating. I have purchased other 1-3-1 Zone defensive DVDs and they were helpful and decent. But this one by Coach Felton is by far the best of the 1-3-1 Zone defenses. I learned so much. The DVD is presented in a diagram (whiteboard)setting which is followed with on the court demostration. You get each player's responsibility and their coverage area. When talking about the "Funnel", one of the segments, I got goosebumps. Coach explained the "How" and the "Why" of pretty much each area of the court and that was worth the price of the DVD right there...but there is more. You get breakdown drills for each position. And lastly, the coach. Felton's teaching style is excellent. Coach follows Coach Wooden's Four Laws (1.Demo and Explanation, 2.Imitation, 3. Correction, & 4. Repetition) of Learning to the letter or number. If you want to use the 1-3-1 Zone Defense,this is an awesome DVD that you should have in your coaching library. There is little time wasted on trivial stuff. The focus is on basketball. Great job, Championship Productions. This DVD is wonderful.

If you like this one the one by Steve Klaas is equally good. I don't know if they offer it here though

Dennis Felton is a great teacher of the game! His explanations and reasons of how the 1-3-1 defense works are crystal clear! The other intangible qualites that I picked up on are: his patience, passion, and love for the game! This video certainly helped me and I know that it will help you as well!

This is one of the best videos I have purchased in recent years! Coach Felton is very detailed in this video. He spends a great amount of time both on the floor and on the dry erase board explaining each position and its slides. I LOVED the breakdown drills he used for each position and the terminology he used when teaching the defense. I would recommend this to anyone!

We will use this defense this coming year. Coach Felton does a great job of showing the 1-3-1 "on the board" as well as demonstrating it on the court.Clearly explained and demonstrated very well.

I absolutely love the presenatiom by coach felton. He did a great job explaining all the roles. It made we want to implement the defense immediately though the season is 7 months away

I have bought many defensive DVD's this off season and this is one of the best ones that I have seen. This zone is excellently explained and I am excited to implement it with my high school team this next year. This DVD is a must if you are interested in the 1-3-1- Zone defense.

it was very well done. the only flaw is that they did not show how to apply the zone vs. an odd front offense. i would recommend this to anyone.

This DVD was outstanding. Coach Felton explained the defense, the roles of the players, and their expectations in a way that was easy to understand and implement with my team. I would advise any coach to get this DVD!

This was very well produced by Felton. He did a good job of teaching this very different defense. My coaching staff is excited to implement it, thinking it will be a good compliment to our man defense. Reccomend it highly.
