33 Perimeter Play Development Drills & Moves

with Jason Shay,
Northwest Florida State College Assistant Coach;
former University of Tennessee Assistant Men's Basketball Coach

This perimeter play development DVD begins with dribble penetration using the Cheat Step. This step allows players to catch the ball closer to the basket and maintain balance as they drive to the basket. Eleven variations of this drill include the shot, go, fake, counter move, main street, pump fake and power, stride step, baseline sweep, baseline counter, reverse lay-up and power dribble. Another key skill for perimeter development is cutting and comes from the cutter series. This series is beneficial for conditioning and puts pressure on player to make shots. The six cuts demonstrated are Screen/step back, back door cut, down screen, flare screen, pro cut and ball screen. The ability to successfully use ball screens is important for all perimeter players. Shay teaches the following off ball screens: shooting, veer and shoot, shoot behind screen and shots after refusing the screen. Relocating on the perimeter after penetration is known as the Circle back. This important skill demands a series of three drills. To develop ball skills Shay teaches a two ball series that includes 10 unique variations that increases forearm strength, fingertip control and expert ball handling.

18 All-Purpose Post Moves

with Jason Shay,
Northwest Florida State College Assistant Coach;
former University of Tennessee Assistant Men's Basketball Coach

Coach Shay believes that establishing position is the first priority to successful play in the post. To get open, Shay teaches two skills - the swim and spin moves. Once open, players are tutored on four moves: Drop step, jump hook middle, turn around middle and up and under. Shay breaks down six scoring moves into shots with and without the dribble. Shay covers three moves in the open stance segment, all of which work best when deep post position is not available. The quick series is good against man or zone, good for penetration and behind the zone on the baseline. These two moves are quick plays that create immediate scoring opportunities and are essential for any post player against the zone. In the high low series, players are drilled on footwork and positioning in the low post when the ball is high. Shay's cutting series makes post players more versatile from all areas of the floor. He demonstrates five cuts: the screen/step back, back door, duck in, down screen and trail.

40 minutes. 2007.
