Skip Prosser: Full Court Match-Up Press

Skip Prosser: Full Court Match-Up Press

with Skip Prosser,
former Wake Forest University Head Coach

Testing the opponent for 94 feet is the objective of Coach Prosser's pressure defense philosophy. The press begins by the 4 man guarding the passer out of bounds. The rest of the initial alignment puts the point guard at half court on the ball side with the 5 man all the way back. The 2 and 3 men line up at the elbows in the backcourt. Key to this press is a quick pick up. What looks like a traditional 1-2-1-1 press actually becomes a man-to-man press! This press is very easy to see because of Prosser's detailed teaching on the floor with 10 players. The key in the backcourt is to deny your man without letting them throw it over the top. Prosser teaches to immediately trap the first pass if that player is a ball handler, making him give it up to a lesser ball handler. Another key is to make the ball be dribbled up the floor instead of passed. Prosser also breaks down trapping technique. Once the ball leaves the trap, he teaches players to sprint off the trap. This DVD will help you understand the reasons for pressing and exactly how to teach your team to exert maximum pressure on the opponent.

80 minutes. 2007.

This is a Pitino-inspired defensive system. I've stolen great rebounding drills from Prosser but won't use anything from this. It's stuff I've seen before. I think it's important to note the first 14 minutes of the video is story-telling, nothing about defensive concepts.
