A believer in balance, McDermott feels that the game is played from the waist down. The jump stop is completely broken down and is a building block of good players. Good balance comes from proper pivoting and athletic stance. Teaching players to get open on the block requires technique footwork and fundamental movements. The basic post moves McDermott demonstrates are the drop step, the jump hook, the step-through and the Sikma move. He includes the head and ball fake while staying in an athletic stance. Two-ball pick up, back-to-the-passer and bad pass drill are excellent drills to work on these moves. Guard development is the second segment and includes eight drills that focus on improving guard play. Another weapon is the jab series including the jab and go, jab and crossover, jab and pull back, and jab-crossover-step back. Solid teaching and a commitment to developing players allows Coach McDermott to build winning programs quickly. This video will provide you with philosophy, teaching points and drills to develop your own winning tradition! 72 minutes. 2007. This item also belongs to the following series! Ratings & Reviews Self-Improvement Basketball Drills: Post and Guard Play on November 20, 2017 Currently 3/5 Stars.3/5 Stars 3 by JohnBostrom881 As with the other video from coach McDermott made in 2007, he starts with a discussion regarding his philosophy about recruiting, scheduling, shooting, etc. Again the problem here is that it takes 25 minutes before we see any players on the floor. Coach McDermott starts with somewhat generic jump stop and positioning drills. This segues into post positioning and drop step and reverse pivot (Sikma drill). There are a few passing into the post drills as well, but I thought overall the post development portion was basic. The guard development portion starts with dribbling skills using two balls. If you seen at least one Ganon Baker video you'll have seen some variation of these drills. This progresses into chair drills using different crossovers. Coach McDermott brings two players/assistant coaches (not sure which) to demonstrate the drills. This is good as they can show the drill at a high level. The downside is that we rarely see any drills at the team level; except for the chair drills everything shown is individual skills only. With so many great skill development videos out there for different positions (Sean Miller, Jay Wright, John Calipari, etc) there really isn't a need for this video. There is also too much talking as mentioned. 3/5 stars. 1 of 1 people found this review helpful. Was this review helpful? Coach McDermott does a good job of going step by step of when/why/how a post should play. Guard work is not as good. I recommend this for the post wanting to take their game to the next level. 6 of 6 people found this review helpful. Was this review helpful?
