Coach Purnell's motto of breaking the door down has launched his program into the national spotlight in two seasons. Purnell has led this impressive turn around with his full court trapping pressure defensive system. In this DVD, Purnell shares his pressure defense philosophy, as well as secondary offense and zone offensive concepts. Purnell's one-third principle anchors all defensive teaching, which will allow you to shrink the court and divide the floor into backcourt and frontcourt trapping areas. With Purnell's trapping technique and positioning your team can eliminate opponent's vision of the floor and cause turnovers. In addition, Purnell demonstrates trapping drills and his disruptive full court diamond press. His offensive discussion includes secondary offense and principles for attacking zone defenses. Purnell's secondary offense flows perfectly into man-to-man or zone offense, making it versatile and easy to execute. Not only does Purnell offer you a system for creating turnovers with pressure, he will guide you to easy baskets against multiple defenses.

Shaka Smart learned a ton from Oliver Purnell when he worked for him at Clemson. So, I purchased this DVD hoping that Coach Purnell would focus intensely on the press, especially the diamond, and show a handful of drills used to build the press and intensify the pressure. In this DVD, Coach Purnell does a decent job of setting up the press, stressing his 1/3 to the ball method, and getting the defense in place once the press is broken. He also shows a couple different ways of defending the inbounds pass. However, if you're looking for innovative drills to help build your press or secrets to VCU's Havoc, you will not find it here. Coach Purnell's secondary break/entry into his zone offense is actually more informative in my opinion and extremely teachable to high school and even middle school teams. It was this portion of the DVD that bumped the star rating from a 3 to a 4.
Good video for high school coaches. Good, basic info.
Coach Purnell explains his pressing system in detail, and does a great job of demonstrating adjustments to a variety of offensive schemes to attack the press. He demonstrates a great secondary break that can be run against man or zone defense. I believe our team will truly benefit from this DVD!
