with Mike Moran,
John Carroll University (OH) Head Coach,
5X Ohio Athletic Conference Champion, 6X NCAA DIII National Tournament Appearances

Mike Moran from John Carroll University is one of the most successful coaches at the NCAA DIII level. He has won over 200 games at John Carroll over the past 12 seasons. As part of his success, Moran has come up with some innovative ways to win. One of the ideas Moran has had success with is platooning. Platooning uses a five-in, five-out system of substituting players. Anyone can platoon players, but Moran knows how to win with platooning. In a lecture-style format, Coach Moran lays out his philosophy on platooning, why it works for him, and a few of the advantages and disadvantages of his system. He also shows you what offenses and defenses work with platooning, which full-court presses and press breakers to use, and more. Everything you need to start platooning, and winning with it, can be found in this informative DVD!

67 minutes. 2005.

Mike Moran: Maximizing Your Team Potential with by TheHall on April 6, 2008 @21:29 [ Reply ]

After watching this video, I started to wonder if I could do this with my team. I coach a small private school boys JV team, where half of my team is in middle school. I played this last year with a HS unit(9th/10th graders) and a MS unit (7th/8th graders). I had lost 80% of my scoring from the year before, and we ended up averaging 12 more points a game this year.

Just about every game they all played. We ran and pressed without much athleticism, but by platooning, the MS unit would come in with great energy and not only maintain the margin, but in many cases extend the lead. They took pride in what they were doing as a unit. Next season they will be my starting unit with a lot of experience in close games.

We were 13-5 this year and 3-0 in OT games. We dominated in OT. Because we were able to wear teams down. Alot of it had to do with platooning. If you are looking for some ideas of how to play more players this has some good ideas to ponder.
