with Mike Deane,
former Wagner College Head Coach

Coach Deane is well known for his match-up zone defense, learned in his MSU years with legendary Michigan State coach Jud Heathcote. This zone is part of system that begins with a 2-2-1 press that becomes the match-up zone. This concept fits most high school situations with one big man in the middle. While this big man controls the lane, the other four players communicate and adjust using man-to-man principles. In transition, players retreat to the paint and play court defense from the inside out. Deane believes this defense is an advantage because opponents cannot simulate what they will see in the game. Drill work begins with a 3 vs. 2 perimeter drill, which challenges the two defenders to guard the entire perimeter. Key teaching terms are airtime, hand behind, denial, helping, holding, closing and dropping. Deane does an excellent job of instructing players as the ball is moved around the perimeter. This presentation culminates in an aggressive 5-on-5 scrimmage session. This DVD is a comprehensive look at one of the games' best defenses and can help any coach win more games!

This video DOES NOT show a 2-2-1 zone press. This video demonstrates an updated but unchanged half-court 2-3 matchup zone that originated in the 1970's. Please note that this is only one type of half-court matchup zone out there; other matchups work a bit differently. Mike Deane is a fiery old school coach who teaches with conviction and holds nothing back. He commands players who are unfamiliar with this defense from the ground up and corrects their mistakes. My hunch is that beginning coaches will not appreciate this video as much as experienced coaches who already know something about the matchup zone. The 2-3 matchup zone IS NOT an easy defense to play - it takes more effort, intensity and communication than most players are willing to give! This defense is not my personal preference, but I can not knock this video. Be sure to write down the instructive tips Coach Deane gives at the end of the video. He knows what he's talking about.

I will admit that I was looking for a general primer on matchup zones, concerning which I was largely ignorant. I found this video which deals with a certain variety, though, very helpful. Coach Deane dealt honestly and candidly with the pros and cons of the inside-out 2-3 matchup and gave good pointers for personnel with which to use it.

The actual instruction itself was good, as he developed the defense through drills (always good when you have to teach it) and the layout of the video wasn't great, but wasn't bad.

This video is also extremely easy to watch as Coach Deane is beyond hysterical without being goofy and not normally to the distraction of the presentation. The audio editting could have been better, but again, it wasn't bad.

As far as ideas and instruction go, this video is highly recommended - especially for people who are being introduced to the matchup or thinking about it for their team or those who need a refresher. Good content.
